The higher the ratio the more line per crank the reel picks up. 5.1 is typically a good reel for slow moving baits like a Hudd. 6.3 & 7.1 are better for faster moving baits

So helpful, so lets say a 175 and Baby wake?

 

I'd go with the 6 or 7 for those baits. Can't go wrong with either of them

To expand on this answer, the ratio is broken down for revolutions of the spool vs. revolutions of the handle.

 

for example:

6.3:1 tells you that for every 1 revolution of the reel handle, the spool revolves 6.3 times. The more the spool revolves, the more line is gathered. The more line that is gathered, the faster the retrieve speed. Make sense?
