12" plastic worms or snakes for rat tails?

I have a few rats and possums that I like to throw and every now and then, the tails get sufficiently chewed up (or ripped off), requiring replacement. I was wondering what kinds of 12" (or longer) plastic worms or plastic snakes the SU community has been using as replacement tails for their rat-type baits.

I've been using the Uptons 13" Straight Tail worm on larger rats. Seems to do fine for me. Have also used the Mann's Jelly worm and it seems to make a fine rat tail as well

Very interested in the Upton 19" worm, that thing looks pretty serious

Clayton told me the possom tails were a local hand pour. He was more than cool about sending me some extras. He also suggested magnum trick worms in a pinch. Im a fan of creme worms and regular trick worms on smaller rats. Just recently Ceaser put me onto using more flexible "hand pour" type finesse worms for more action, especially on HIS baits.... Willard knows his rats.

Lots of worms will work, the jelly worm sounds promising. But length, weight and thickness will all guve you different tail actions along with changing the baits swim a bit. The trade off with soft worms is the fall off easier but my buddy uses the 10" yamamoto cut tails and they look pretty good. Not the most buoyant but on a steady retrieve they are pretty killer. I prefer the mag trick worms in natural colors or the V&M super pork pins in the 8" sizes. The pork pins come in laminated color that look great. Not a big fan of the pink and weird nightcrawler colored tails... I like to match the tail to the water conditions, seems to get alot more bites than a pinky

I'd really suggest you check out the Uptons worms. All hand poured and the larger ones have a nice thick diameter which match well with the big rats. Very cool colors as well, and they smell like blueberries haha.

I just like rodents that's all. I ran into an issue with a rat I almost had done that I thought would help illustrate my point on diff rat tails. I was finishing aasenke's rat and went out for a swim test before I shipped. I usually can interchange between the two tails I normally use, one very supple and skinny the other fatter and heavier. I thought Id try the skinny tail and see how she looked. When I swam the bait I couldn't believe it. It didn't perform up to par at all! I was racking my brain like how did this happen, what did I do. I swim test all the baits pre-paint and epoxy and tune them in. It looked great before, what the heck?! I checked the lip, hangers... I mean nothing could have changed. I was very bummed and a little angry. Then I thought to myself well I tuned it with the other tail. I tune the baits pretty specific but a diff tail ruin the action.. no way! Well shoved on the other tail and like magic it swam great again. Ive built a lot of rats and thought they all could take a similar but slightly different tail... nope. Not this one at least. Maybe its an isolated incident or my rats are more sensitive because the way I ballast them to sit in the water, but this opened my eyes and made me realize tail changes style and even length can effect the performance of a rat, even if its subtle, it could be the difference between a lure that smokes em or just another cookie cutter bait that matches what everyone else has. Try out some new stuff, you might just surprise yourself
