Toxic Baits Wake N' Crank

Background:

I have had the pleasure of working with member Ceaser here on the Underground for some time now. About three or four years ago he approached me with the idea of molding one of his wooden wakes for the first time. A couple months later as i am sitting down in a little taqueria listening to the most horrid karaoke you have ever heard Ceaser pops his head in and puts a wake bait in my hands. First impression, the bait sits very low in the water leaving only the top of the soft tail out the water. Has a very wide left to right movement in both the front and rear section with little body roll. A couple hours later and i put two sevens in the boat.

Ok now the actual review:

Fast forward and the next batch shows up in my mail. Sweet! First look and i can tell the bait has been revised. Shorter in length (around 7 inches) and not as wide as the first bait i was given. I get on the phone with Ceaser and ask whats up. He further begins to explain how he spoke with several bait makers on the molding processes, weighing, master, paint, epoxies etc and he decided to change some things. Cool, i can tell he is taking this R&D pretty serious and not just kicking these baits out like you see on the current market in the swimbait scene.

First trip out and i notice the bait sits in the water EXACTLY how the first version i received does (CONFIDENCE!!!!). On the super slow retrieve the head dives down an inch or so while the top of the tail sticks out of the water and wakes with ease. So far this has been the deadliest way to wake it for me. Pitch it in to tulle pockets and reel as slowly as you can. On the long cast the only thing you can see when slow rolling on top is just the tip of the tail and the disturbance of water behind it. Not a V like you see with the slammer or shellcracker G2 but a swirl if you can try and picture, something i havent seen on the market yet.

Picking up the handle speed and the bait instantly dives down head first giving a thump thump thump sensation through the rod. Similar to a 68 tail thump when you burn the 68. The bait gives a more erratic Z motion between the front and rear section but the body does not roll. On the crankdown the bait dives head first at an angle allowing grass to spread around the bait and not get stuck on the bill.

Maybe C can post some swim videos from his IG or YT when he gets a chance. I will try to do the same when i get time.

Im not an expert when it comes to hooks but i have tried both the ST 36 and ST 56 on the bait and both have performed well.

In early trials i experienced paint issues with the sections close to the the joint where the two halves made contact. This was long before C started thinking about production. My most current baits which are the ones here on the SU store have been holding up fine.

I think part of the reason C downsized from the first version was to target the tournament scene and the conventional fishermen who dont have fancy swimbait gear. These baits weigh between 2-3oz and can be fished on flipping sticks or MH - H swimbait rods. I have been tossing mine on a Dobyns 795 SBML, MOAM Custom MH, LDC H, and Dobyns 867 with success.

My goal for this review was to show how this bait became what it is in its final version. Ceaser takes his bait building very seriously and doesn't release a bait until its READY to be released. When a flaw arose, Ceaser figured out why, went back to the drawing board and fixed it. This bait has undergone many trials and testing for some years now and the results prove it. Tournament winnings, Double digits, long term abuse etc. I hope this review gives you the confidence to pick one up and know that it will hold up to what you will put it through.

Here are some pics!

Thanks

Really nice job on the review. Any idea on how deep it runs on 20# mono? 15# fluoro?

Thanks in advance.

depends on the hooks your running. if you switch out to st 56 you can prob get it down 8+ ft in warmer water. but with the st36 it comes with about 4-5 ft on a longish cast.
