Mattlures STRONG Shad preview

Without hesitation I can say that the hard swimbaits that come out of the Mattlures workshop are the finest you can buy.  While many manufacturers make good looking lures, few approach the fanatical realism that goes into a Mattlures hard bodied swimbait.  His latest offering, the Strong Shad, joins the immensely successful and highly coveted bluegill bait...the Hardgill.  And while there is no shortage of multi-piece shad swimbaits already on the market I think you will find the combination of taxidermy-like detail and strong swimming action quite compelling.  Add to that there will be 3 sizes offered, multiple colors, and various sink rates and you have a shad swimbait offering more complete than any other.

Carl, that was one heck of a thorough review of the bait.  I'm looking forward to giving it some time in the water.  Like you, I'm too far north to be considered prime shad country but we do have alewives, herring, white perch, and migratory shad - all which have that overall shape and coloration.

And if sometime down the road Matt decides to do it in a golden shiner color he certainly has that color pattern down.  The pic attached is a prototype gold shiner glide (not the strong shad) that he never commercialized.  But look at how good of a golden shiner color he can do.

Oh boy, like a little kid waiting for Christmas....can't wait to toss this Shad. Every one of Matt's lures are an art work. Not sure if any of you are "Lure Collectors", but, I now wish I would have started a display case of all his lures from the get go.

I was fortunate to be able to get one to try out.  I only had 2 hours to fish yesterday but managed these two below (roughly 3.5 and 4 pounds) plus a couple of smaller ones.  So far I'm really liking the bait and I'll report more fully when I've had more time to fish it.  These aren't huge fish but its a good start.

Hey Wayne,

That golden shiner looks great.  No surprise there.....everything that comes out of Mattlures has that familiar great realism.

Very nice on those catches on the Strong Shad.  Looks like you have the lighter color....which looks awesome as well.  Is that the 6" model?

Hi Carl, the Strong Shad I have is the middle 7.5" size.

The golden shiner glide is a prototype from a year or two ago.  Matt never put that bait into the line despite my continued urging.  I'm liking the  strong shad in the current color, but I'm also hoping Matt will eventually release it in a golden shiner color too.

Sunny skies, 87 degrees, and no wind had the bass looking to put shade over their heads this morning.  Fishing was anything but fast but I did manage a couple 2-3 pounders flipping jigs into cover.

The best fish of the morning was the one below that went 5-2.  I was swimming the strong shad as close to the edges of lily pads as I could.  There was a two foot gap between two thick pad beds and this one crushed the shad as it came through.
