6kg Catfish

My wife and I took the tent and headed for a 2 day trip on a river a few hours drive away. The bass were weary and tough to catch but it was great to be out.

Day One taught me that if your rod touches a piece of electric fencing (strung across the river by a crazy farmer) you are going to dance.

Late on Day Two I swung my 7 inch Undertaker under a overhang and it got absolutely smoked by a 6kg beady eyed Spawn of Satan - also known as the Sharptooth Catfish.

It almost jolted the rod out my hand. After the initial viscous strike it surged down into the current and put up a massive fight. I'm not a fan of these beasts, as they decimate the bass during spawn, but they do put a serious bend in your rod. Sarah even took over fishing for a while and had fun being pulled around in the kickboat.

Spawn of Satan?  Nah, just a local fish that can lay the wood to the introduced bass.  Nothing wrong with big, aggressive catfish! Is the area you're fishing far enough south not to worry about crocs?  My sister moved to Cape Town a year ago and I'm trying to scheme a way to visit - if I pull it off, I'll have to contact you for some fishing ideas.

Nice fish!

Hey Chris. If you're ever in Cape Town give me a shout.

No crocs or hippos here and we have some good fishing.

Sharptooth Catfish are from Africa but invasive to the Western Cape. Bass have been here for almost 100 years now while the catfish is a recent invader...

That's interesting about the sharptooth catfish - were they brought in for food and escaped from fish farms?  How close are the nearest tigerish?  That's another species I'd love to catch!

I've not crossed paths with sharptooth cats but admit that I'm addicted to throwing swimbaits at wels cats.  I've done it twice now and can't wait to do it again!

I will definitely touch bases with you when/if I get down to Cape Town to visit.  Keen to hit the saltwater scene there too (and see my sister and niece).
