Jschulz11
Nice catch. Which paddle tail. Will be fishing up in the lakes of northern Ontario next month and am looking for some advise on some monster pike lures. Thinking savage gear since they fish for esox a trade n but any help would be appreciated. Really want to be the big winner when fishing against my dad lol. But anyhow congrats on the catch. Pike
Hi JSchulz11, I used a very simple Setup. 7 inch shad style paddle tail swimbait rigged on an 8/0 vmc jighook. 3/4 oz weight. I never fished for pike in Ontario so its hard for me to judge. But Savage Gear has a lot of good lures. Just pick one that you feel comfortable with and keep grinding, good things will happen. Start with "normal" sized lures, and get a feel for the water and make as many casts as possibble (usually easier with a lighter lure). By "normal" I mean about 6-8 inches. Dont be afraid to fish open and deep water as the bigger pike tend to move out of the shallow bays and follow the open water forage during the summer month. Paddle tail swimbaits on different jig hooks/weights are the cheapest and easiest way to start. And they catch. @ Zigtherat If you fish constantly the whole year you get about 1 or 2 shots a year on fish of that size.

peter_the_fox
I work as a pike guide in the Northwest Territories, Canada and grew up in Ontario chasing pike. Big buck tails in black and orange are the ticket but glides, bull dawgs, and 3 piece swim baits work wonders on those ontario pike. Stick to natural-ish colours up there for the big fish - they've seen Johnson silver minnows and 5 of diamonds 10,000 times! Hope that helps Jschultz11 and good luck on your quest for a giant esox! peter_the_fox
When I say natural colours I mean perch, shiners, shad, cisco etc.
