danthefisherman
I haven't caught an actual swimbait fish since March, so I was starting to get a bit discouraged throwing the big baits to no avail. I would get a few followers, but the fishing at my little home lake just hasn't been the same as it once was. My brother has caught a few recently, but the fish seemed to magically gravitate towards his bait and ignore mine hahaSo yesterday after work I decided to try something I've never seriously tried to do before: night fishing. During the daytime we did't get so much as a wink on our big baits. Dave had fished earlier in the day and could only manage fish on poppers and spy baits. But I had a good feeling about the evening and I told Dave as much. We headed out when it was still bright and hot. As usual, the fish were uninterested in our bigger offerings and we only managed a few dinks on conventional gear. Even the small fish seemed to be in a bad mood! But today was the day I would kick the skunk out of the boat, I could feel it! So we paddled to a deeper channel with pontoon boats for cover and waited for the dark to come. For the longest time, everything was the as slow as in the day...not one wink or bump. Then boom! They turned on like a switch! Unfortunately, we were desperately using conventional gear. Dave was the first to get hit on a grub suspended under a bobber (yes, a bobber). The fish jumped and threw the hook. Then a solid 1.5 crushed my dropshot in the dark! 1.5 pounders can be pretty good sized fish in our lake. I picked up the swimbait rod again and threw one of Dave's new 5" gills into the fray. Let it sink, slow and steady retrieve, and I got CRUSHED!By a dink with a head smaller than the bait. I thought I had a monster she hit so hard! Still, I was just glad to have a fish in the boat haha. The little sucker ripped the tail off of the bait I hooked that fish pretty good and spent about twenty minutes trying to get the hook out of its tiny jaw. After releasing that fish and retying I made another cast towards the same spot. Nothing. Then I turned and launched the bait towards a pontoon. Midway back, WHAM! A solid fish came up from behind and nailed the gill! Same slow and steady retrieve. She started jumping like crazy at the boat and I almost had a heart attack as Dave tried to net her in the dark. She managed to shake off on a jump but thankfully landed in the net. Only 2.18 pounds but packed plenty of punch! - Lil' Piggy Swimbaits 3 pc, 5", slow sink gill - Dobyn'e Fury 795 - Quantum EXO 300 Thanks for reading and sorry for grammar errors...too pumped.
