Hey fellas, new to the forum and glad to be here! My setup is a Tranx 400 paired with a Dobyns champion series 807. I want to target lake trout late fall and spring and need some advice. I'll be fishing from shore off or near the damn. My concern is the rip rap fishing a Huddleston. I want to fish close to bottom but with so many rocks I don't want to lose a $30 dollar bait. The damn dives down to 60 feet and moving a bait up its face is a steep incline. I'm not fishing hard baits with trebles for this reason but want to know how to approach this structure? I realize lake trout come shallow and have caught them in 10 feet of water during this time, usually near deeper water, but hoping you gents have some suggestions.....

Thanks

Work smart, quarter cast to cut incline in half. Personally, I'd figure anything but hit bottom. It'll take feeling out, start conservative with countdown to retrieve, going a little deeper each time, before long you'll be able to count depth you seek. Try to keep it just off the rocks. Also, no offense to anyone, but I'm not sold a retriever would help shore casting riprap even a little. Wherever the bait sticks will likely stick the harness with and even Superman would struggle moving those rocks. Maybe I'm wrong, but I know I'll never try it. Good luck.

I have had a lot of luck getting Hudds out of riprap from the bank. I wouldn't be worried about losing baits it will happen but not near as much as u would think. Throwing them on mono is the key to getting your bait back. The stretch in the mono provides a spring action when you load your rod once snagged and then quickly release the tension forcing the bait away from you and out of the snag. You could try a lure retriever from the bank but from my exsperience it doesn't work well. If you can afford a Tranx you can afford to lose some Hudds. Remember to post pics of those Lakers!

Throw them at an angle if you're worried about losing them, so that you can walk down the shore and pull from the opposite side. Let it fall on a semi slack line so you know when it hits, and get it moving, just ticking the rocks. You're still going to lose some baits, but that should minimize it and still catch some fish.

Thanks for the input guys, I dropped some coin on a sweet big bait setup because I wanted to ensure longevity of my gear but also to outfit myself with the right gear for the job. I agree that losing baits is part of the game and a shot at a trophy laker is worth it! Around these parts there the hardest fighting fish and stoked for fall to arrive! I like the idea of quartering the damn face. I had planned to fish fluorocarbon but if others agree mono is the way to go let me know......

Flouro is great but once it gets nicked by the jagged rocks forget about it...Go with mono, something like Pline CXX...Good luck and can't wait to see some pics of monster Lakers...

Thanks, I'm preparing for late fall and would love to post some pics of a giant for you all, I can catch a bunch of 25 inchers on smaller tackle but am devoted to the swimbait game! I like the mantra "Go big or go home"! I was thinking seaguar fluoro abrazx for line because it's tough and lakers have hard jaws, need some hook setting power. Would any of you put a top hook stinger on the 8 inch hudd? Appreciate your input fellas!
