COPOLYMER (can you throw topwater?)

The only line that floats is braid which has a specific gravity of less than 1.0.  Fluoropolymer lines sink the fastest because the specific gravity is up around 1.4 or higher.  Nylon homopolymer and copolymer monofilaments have specific gravities around 1.18 so they will sink but relatively slowly.  Surface tension can make a nylon or fluoro line float momentarily but once the surface tension is broken both will sink.  If you don't believe that, dip a piece in a glass of water and see what it does.  Either braid or mono is fine for surface lures.  One issue with braid is that it is so supple that it often tangles with the hooks on the cast of the retrieve.  My choice would either be straight mono (copolymer) or braid with a mono leader.

All I use is braid to mono leader.  40-65lb braid to a short 3ft leader of 30lb mono, connected with a modified albright knot.

I've caught striper to 30lbs and tuna and yellowtail to 40lbs. I'm more than confident using this setup for bass..

You get the non stretch of braid for the long distance hooksets and the mono leader eliminates the line getting caught up in the hooks/splits.

I would recommend straight braid or braid to leader. From experience, throwing straight mono or copoly gets tiring fast. The stretch makes you work harder then you should and I find myself getting worn down quicker. Using braid you get instant reaction on the bait and can work it much easier.
