Gear ratio dilemma

Hey, I'm relatively new to swimbaiting and have decided on the tranx 300  to take over as my primary swimbait reel. However, I haven't decided on a gear ratio. This reel will throw a wide range of swimbaits from glides, to tt's, to jig hook baits such as the hudd and osprey. This reel will also pull double duty in the inshore salt throwing topwater and ripping plugs. Any response would be appreciated, thanks.

if u throw softbaits alot then def the slower one, but if the majority of your fishing is done with a glide bait and some jointed hard bait s you should lean towards the faster gear ratio. Both options can handle all offerings.

I am not sure the tranx even in lowest gear ratio would be a good hudd thrower. For hudds you want the slowest reel possible imo. The lowest gear ratio tranx has impressive inches retrieved per handle turn...I see the tranx being an awesome glide and wake bait reel for that reason. You will be able to catch up to the bait on slack line retrieves.

IMO its up to the user. Some people have to ability to use higher gear ratio for slower baits. Some like slower gear ratio and just speed up for baits that need it. I always have a problem of reeling too fast. so for slower baits like hudd/mags ill use a 5.1:1 and ill do 7.1:1 for stuff like glides and cranking baits. 6.3 is another reel I keep around for those days im throwing a wide range of baits. in the end its really up to you and "your style" of fishing.

I have a problem with those super slow ratio reels, sometimes if my hudd is coming over a rock, I'll "feel" it over with the rod tip. Then by the end of my slow swing, I get bit and have to reel like 20 times to catch up and get a good hookset. This can cost you fish, I'll take a faster gear ratio and some self control over literally being unable to catch up to the fish.

First, I totally agree with Dean, every body is different. My take... The Tranx pg is 30" pt hg is 40"pt. Big difference! I work my glides pretty slow, so the pg works for me, and I love it for Hudds and everything else. I do own an hg but I'm saving it for my winter saltwater travels, where/when speed is key. A curado 300ej @ 32 pt may be an alternative, if you're a Shimano guy.
