MOAM Maniac review

Hey, guys! Finally have time to sit down and do a review. I wanna talk about my MOAM Maniac 6-12oz parabolic 8’6â€. Gonna make this as honest of a review as I can. Hope some of you find this helpful. Please read the whole thing so you can get the full story. Here it is...

So as I said, this is a 6-12oz bait, 8’6†length rod. Gonna start with the cons of the rod....there’s only two. Straight up, the rod is heavy! I like to think I’m in pretty good shape and I bomb nothing but big baits all day. But this rod wears me out. NOW, that being said, two things need to be taken into account. I’m guessing this rod is inevitably going to be a heavy rod as it is made for giant baits(tosses the Mother with ease). And clearly you don’t want a featherweight rod when tossing the biggest of baits. The other thing to consider here is that since it is a big rod, you’re more than likely tossing really big baits on it, so I’m sure that has to do with it wearing you out after tossing it a while. I do wish it was lighter, but maybe that’s just not possible on a rod that’s capable of tossing 12+oz.

The next thing isn’t a huge deal. Just personal preference really. The hook keeper is a hole drilled thru the trigger. I’m not a fan. I like the concept and that it’s different from others, but when I go to grab a rod I’m gonna grab it where I’d normally hold it by the reel seat and if I have a bait tied on I’m gonna stick my pinky finger every time. The other issue with it is the hole isn’t nearly big enough. When I first got it I had to really work just to get a 2/0 st41 thru it. It has worn out some but I can’t even begin to get a 3/0 st66 in there so I have to hang my TTs on the reel. I’m sure you can easily drill the hole out just a little and fix this.

Got those out of the way. Here’s what I love about the rod. It’s a BEAST!! This rod says 6-12oz. Well let me explain something to you. That’s not accurate, because it’s MORE LIKE a 2-14oz rod, legitimately!!! I tie on a Mother and overhand bomb it and it feels comfortable. I can cast a 250, 11†TT, super slammer, and MCL wake gill a mile. And if need be, I can easily fish a WSB 125, pats, 9†slammer, Swaver 200 on it. I even have fished a g2 shellcracker on it!! It has THAT soft of a tip. The taper is insane. Sweet spot? That’s 5-9oz. This rod flexes very deep for being such a solid rod. You’re not pulling trebles out with this rod. I love that it’s an 8’ 6â€. If you’ve never fished one, you’re missing out. Hooking up and fighting a big fish becomes effortless.

This rod is spiral wrapped to the right. I think it looks kinda cool. Does make it more difficult to put a rod sock on. I have to say, I didn’t get to catch enough big fish on the rod to notice any big advantages of the spiral wrap, but the claimed advantages do make perfect sense to me. I did feel like I had more control over fish, but I’ll need more time to confirm that.

The reel seat looks good and is really comfortable. My Lexa 300 pairs up very well and isn’t loose at all once it’s tightened down. That’s big for me. Once she’s locked down I want it to stay there and not flex at all and this does.

I guess the last thing really is the fact that this is the most bomb looking rod ever. The finish is amazing. No, looks don’t catch fish but it’s a nice looking rod. And still looks really nice after a year of use.

I was bummed I didn’t have a good year on the biggest of baits so I didn’t fish it as much as I wanted. It was a terrible glide year. I have high hopes for sticking some Mother and Hinkle Trout fish on it next year! I’d definitely recommend checking out MOAM’s line of rods and Camrone is a super chill guy and will build whatever you want. Excellent customer service!

Good review. I have two MOAMs and have no complaints about either. Mine are rated at 2-6oz and 3-8oz. Neither of these feels heavy to me but the 3-8 is noticeably heavier than the smaller one. I would imagine the 6-12oz is a good bit heavier than either one I have and it's probably just something that comes with the territory of having a rod that stout.
