Pickerel problems part2

So I already asked about people having problems with pickerel and most people said they haven't had much problem. But I have gone fishing around 10 times so far with swimbaits and I have only landed one sb fish so far(not surprised) but it was a pickerel. Also today I got bit if by a pickerel using 25lb copoly. I've only used hudd68s so far. So my question is do I keep throwing the copoly and just deal with the loses or can I use a steal leader of some sorts? Will that bother and bass that might take a look at my bait? I'm in highschool and have a tight budget so I hate loosing stuff but I'm still addicted to trying to catch big bass.

I fish mainly for pike and catch a lot of bass in the process. 40-50lb flouro leader is probably more than sufficient for any pickerel you will encounter. Unless you are creeping the hudd in crystal clear water super slow I doubt the bass will notice.

Side note: I fish a pond with big bass and ALOT of pickerel. I've found that if I use a slower steady retrieve I catch bass and a fast erratic retrieve will trigger the pickerel almost 100% of the time. Pickerel also love anything flashy. Good luck out there

Use real leader material.  Its the hardest of the fluorocarbons and if your 50 or above you should have less of an issue.  Pike guys use 80 and land over half but still get bit off.  Keep your baits cheap so the losses are not so heart breaking.  I like the trash fish in the double pack not cheap loosing 10 dollars plus hook but easier than a 30 dollar hud.

i find that its the small guys that are bait ruiners/tail nippers. You may be getting bit off with a 68 because it's not hard for a big pickerel to choke something that size, thus clipping the line

Big surface baits may help you sort out those slimy guys too. Have yet to have a pickerel shark attack a slammer

I'll be sure to remember that for when it's warmer though

Ok I was trying to put this with that but it didn't for whatever reason. Problem is my water is 40-35° right now so I don't think I'll be moving any bass with topwater. I'll be sure to remember that for when it's warmer though

I saw this video in another thread and it's gold, if you're in northern or pickerel infested waters. I can't seem to figure out the YT video embedding, anyway the link should work.

Just picked up some 60lb leader and crimps so I'll see how that goes

If you can swing the knot I would Alberto the connection knot and crimp in a owner hyper wire split ring on the terminal end. It may take a few more seconds to change baits with a good pair of pliers but little chance of failure and minimum components low cost.
