Mossypumpkin
Ice is finally going out and I'v been out a couple time just fishing from the bank. Water temp is about 40 and I got my first fish yesterday on a jerkbait, so now it is time to go to the swimmies. What retrieves are you guys using for slammers and hudds in water 40 - 45 degrees? I realize a slammer isnt the best choice for that temp, but I know it can be done. And for hudds I am using mostly 6" in perch and juvenile. What baits do you guys use in water that cold? Just kind of interested what guys are throwing and what techniques they are using in super cold water. Any input is appreciated, as always! bassbass
The bass were hitting the hyper herring last Sunday. The water was 41. Used a slow and than stop. See picture in gotem section. Three bass total on the HH.
wiswimbait
That cold I find pike and use billed baits fished real slow but subsurface. Pike are active at 40 and active fish are more better. Legally I'm pretty limited where I can fish this time of year so that's got a lot to do with it.
Mossypumpkin
Interesting thoughts, guys! One of the problems with it being just after ice-out is that the fish are not shallow so that takes out a lot of baits. The fish are on steep banks and drop-offs in at least 8 feet of water and tend to be on bottom. Maybe it will be easier when I get out in the boat and have more fishable water where there are active fish. Any thoughts on catching slammer fish in cold water?
