evans_usmc69
Squid07(Brandon) and I hit a small trout stocked lake(from the Jon boat) again today. Mostly nothing but lazy follows and half hearted smacks. However, once we got to a small tree coming out of the water, we found the possible DD that I had smack the tail of the Mother and follow it to the boat 7+ times about a week ago. After throwing the Mother multiple times and not getting anything(Brandon had got it to follow a Deps 250 some), Brandon threw his new Baitsmith Mag at it. I'm not sure if it was the first or 2nd cast with it, but he had it follow with a 6-7+ buddy and the possible DD tried to inhale his bait!!! However, Brandon got antsy and jerked just a tad too early and ripped the bait out of it's mouth Nothing against Brandon, I probably would of done the same thing seeing a fish of that size trying to inhale a soft swimbait after throwing at the fish multiple times with no result except a lazy follow. Plus, like I told him, this was a great learning experience for both of us. Not just using a follow up, but also watching how a possible DD tries to swallow a Baitsmith because we both had front row seats for this tragedy I just wanted to post this because it reminds me a lot of how Oliver got his 17lb BEAST to follow the Hinkle glide then follow up with a Baitsmith. I'm beginning to think this is a good 1-2 punch for fish in Pre-Spawn I'm gonna try to keep a follow up bait that moves a tad slower on the deck to see how this works. 8" Hudd or Baitsmith mag when I'm imitating trout and maybe a hudd 68 or 6" hudd when imitating smaller baitfish. Anybody else tried this approach with any luck? I know with conventional fishing I would always keep a flick shake on the deck if I was throwing a buzzbait or spinnerbait. Never had a ton of success with it, but I did get it to work a few times for some decent sized bass.
boomah21
Last year I caught a number of followers using a real prey dead stick carp bait. I would toss it beyond the fish so I wouldn't spook it.....twitch it close then just let it sit. Good topic
Deltaman
I've used this sort of idea with top water wake baits. If a fish follows a nine inch bait but won't commit, I'll come back a little later and throw a five inch bait. Works more often than I ever thought it would. Super interesting topic. I can see why it would work so well. Drawing out fish with the glide, then using a more subtle bait after they've shown off their location. You'll have to tell us how it works out on your next trip! flaswimbaiter
I have tried following up my BAA follows with a 68 and 8" hudd, but without success. Maybe I should keep trying. Good post!
aasenke
I haven't had the most success with follow up lures either
Ceaser
I like to follow up the two piece glide fish that miss with a one piece glide. They will usually trigger on that bait if they dont commit to the bigger wide swimming two piece. the last glide fish in the got em section I posted a while ago was on the glide glide combo. Squid07
Man I feel like a jackass letting that toad get away but it was definetely a learning experience. I am going to keep in mind when Im throwing a glide bait(or any other bait) around docks and brush and only get follows, to try a follow up bait and see how they react. This fishing trip was a lesson learned also about giving the fish time to inhale the bait when it comes to fishing with soft baits. If I hadnt of seen the fish I probably would of caught it but with seeing the fish right there eating the bait, I got all excited and prematurely jerked it(no pun intended ) Can't wait to go out fishing next week and give this a try some more and see what results I get. Nufo
Lucky Craft pointer or Staysee 128 on an eratic retriever straight murders stripers that wont commit. Also the S-Waiver and the lucky craft glide work well for this. I haven't tried it on bass but prettty sure it will work if your quick enough.
