Welcome Trey. -
Rod: Mattlures MH swimbait rod, rated for 1-4 oz. IMO perfect for 6"-7" hardbaits, soft paddletails (like osprey talons). I used this for weedless hudds though with braid. Rod is only 3 months old, and in superb condition, The only thing wrong is that the butt cap is broken (was that way when I got it), and taped with electrical tape. $60 + $25 for shipping. Reel: Revo toro winch 51. This reel changed my mind about Abu Garcia reels, and this is coming from a proud member of the posse. bought new and is cosmetically and mechanically perfect. Comes with box and papers, but no extra power handle. Spooled with 80lb Daiwa Samurai + backing. $185 TYD Swimbaits: Mattlures hard bass floater, new never thrown. 7.5", 3.5 oz Weedless ROF 12 hudd new in pack $55 TYD (for both) Line: At least 200 yards of 80 lb Samurai. Will put in an extra spool of Big Game, PLine fluoroclear, Yo-Zuri hybrid or something useful. $35 TYD Prices are for paypal gift or money order. Add 4% otherwise. Pics on request.

"Everything Matters, Yet Nothing Matters" lol. I like a leader anyway.

If I don't know the terrain I'm fishing like the back of my hand, I always go with a soft bait. I swimbait fish from the shore on a budget and can't afford to lose too many lures. I like hudd 68s, matt's T-series, and of course the old stand-by ROF5 hudd. If I know I'm not likely to lose a bait, I love me some triple trouts! Also the slow-sink hardgill! Hardbaits are more fun as someone else mentioned.

OP, you need to spend more time on this board. Welcome to the addiction!

There' an SML in TN too? anyway, I voted hoping that it's the SML in VA..
-
That is due to the low shock absorption of braid, since it's so low-stretch.

Good deal there too. I have the same rod and reel for 8" baits, except that it's a 401.

Slammer/Wake series/Hardgill Floater Freestyle/TT/Hardgill ss Hudd ROF 12/Rising Son Would that be a good starting series? Great choices all around! Except that for bottom bouncing, you might want to throw ROF5 or weedless hudds if you fish a lot of snaggy places from the shore (like me). You might also also to pick up a floating lipless bait. The Spro BBZ is an inexpensive bait that catches fish. Know that it's a knockoff before buying though. So it's your choice. Mattlures hardbass are wicked baits. I just bought a hard perch last week for a reasonable price. You can't go wrong with Mickey's, Matt's, Randall's, Rago's hardbaits, along with 22nd centurys and slammers and a few others. Buy a few baits, learn what they do, and keep throwing them until you start sticking fish, or lose them, or give up the game. I was in your place this time last year, and I haven't done too badly so far. Good luck.

Tried a lot of economy braids, and a few premium ones. After a lot of lost money, lost time, lost fish and headaches, I know for sure the only brand that's I'll continue to buy is Daiwa Samurai- whether it's in 30 lb for little jigs, 55 lb for big jigs, or 80 lb for weedless hudds and punkers.

Good stuff Randall. Learnt a lot, and saved your post so that I can come back and refresh my memory when needed. Thanks!
