I wouldn't focus on what you are using at night and focus more on when you are fishing (moon cycles and if the moon is up or down) and where you are fishing. Where I fish, there is no such thing as too shallow at night. Fishing a bait parallel to the bank and right on the bank often produces. 

I fish a lot at night and typically do better. I feel like it has more to do with me and conditions then big fish being more active. I believe the darkness provides cover for me. I'm not in a fancy boat so I am often out of position or very visible to fish during the day. This matters less at night. I also think I focus more at night. 
In the long run, any time on the water is a good time. The only way to catch fish it to grind it out day and night. Focus on and document what works and try to replicate that when possible.

That’s actually his first rat fish! I cast he reels! Only way I get my wife to let me fish more and I really get to fish more hahah! Sometimes it’s a headache and I want him to walk the plank but man they love it out on the water!
