It's pretty easy to tell an 8 and 9 that eats a hinkle that you See and feel. -

If they're following a glide and not eating it try throwing a soft bait In behind. I found that if they're not aggressive following them or eating, then that presentation isn't what they're looking for

Went to this one pond. Smallest fish was 4 pounds. Wouldn't eat anything except the negotiator. It was funny as hell catching 4-6 pounders almost every cast while your buddy struggles to get a follower -
