Glide bait retrieves
ABeiermann and 3 others reacted to Jon P for a topic
My favorite glide bait retrieve is a 20-30 slow revolutions, a quick burn like your glide is trying to flee a following fish, long pause like it exhausted itself or died until you feel you have to continue the retrieve to avoid bottom, three twitchy revolutions of the reel starting slow and jerky and speeding up and to the speed of the first 20-30 revolutions like the bait is coming back to life, then repreat the process. Imagine you're a trout going: "we vibin' we vibin'" (20-30 revolutions) "OH SH-T A BASS" (burn it) "damn I'm too tired to run, let me diiieee" (kill it) "no wait I want to LIVE" (twitch twitch and crank it) "we vibin' again" (20-30 revolutions)4 points -

Line diameter vs Casting Distance
MountainMan83 and 2 others reacted to Jim137a for a topic
I tested it last year and really liked it. Super low stretch, no memory so it lays really nice on the reel and casts very well. 20# line is .37 mm The only reason I haven’t switched to it yet is I have 2 spools of Izorline cxxx that are 2670 yards - so I literally have a few miles of line to burn through.3 points -

Shallow spools like the Daiwa HLC models are awesome, I've got a 1516 on my Ryoga 1520 and it casts like a rocket!2 points -

Glide bait retrieves
Fishingthesoutheast reacted to porkmeatballs for a topic
Haha I absolutely love this description! In all seriousness, I do try my best to imagine how a scared baitfish would be swimming and fish my glide accordingly. I truly believe that fishing with confidence leads to more bites!1 point -
Of you're considering a different copoly, have a look at the Varivas Absolute BBM. It's a low diameter, low stretch copoly and really a new innovation in nylon line. I don't have a ton of experience with it yet, but @Jim137a does. Hopefully he will chime in here.1 point

Line diameter vs Casting Distance
Bass the east reacted to bigpoppabass for a topic
I still the think the reel is more important. Those first generation curado 300s were casting marvels with any diameter line but they lacked cranking power....With a long rod you feasibly should be able to get away with very low diameter lines, since the rod is doing most of the work. But once the rod is not bent, the line strength becomes more important. I learned that lesson flyfishing for trout. If you have to grab the line, the fish has the advantage then.1 point -

I'd probably cast off less baits if I just stuck to mono and didn't fiddle with my brake settings1 point -
Line diameter vs Casting Distance
Bass the east reacted to brootalititties for a topic
Lightest line/setup you can get away with is the move imo. Not even gonna lie the jdm big bait scene is what inspired this after starting with a 400 size reel on recommendation from a lot of old school swimbaiters (butch brown always swore by that old Calcutta 400). Your casting distance is affected by many factors but a big one is the weight of the spool so the bigger the spool with a ton of line on it is sacrificing spool inertia, the bigger/heavier the bait the less this is a factor. I’m doing 16lb seaguar or sunline fc on anything under 3 oz from now on and switched to a 150 size reel, never going back lol. 100 yards of line is all you will ever need for bass fishing1 point -
Line diameter vs Casting Distance
Bass the east reacted to Jon P for a topic
On my cranking rods I run ten meters of shock leader to a eight carrier braid backing for added casting distance. Once the mainline is out of the guides it really sails. 16lb shock to 30lb braid for anything an ounce or less. 20lb to 40lb for anything up to 2 oz. and anything heavier than that I prefer straight mono or fluoro so I don't have to worry about backlashing below the connection knot and snapping off the whole mainline. Really any baits I'm focused on really bombing out there to reach stuff other anglers aren't touching aren't true swimbaits since most jointed and soft swimbaits don't excel at distance casting. For pike and saltwater stuff (8-12oz.+) Sunline's Monster Battle braid and tapered leaders are the sh-t. Really the only line system I feel like I can aggressively cast a giant glide on all day without snapping off. That said the tapered leaders all have 100lb diameter tips, which isn't ideal for bass fishing. Sunline came out with the Tepa tapered leaders this year, which are light enough to be useful for bass fishing, but too short to be useful, and only available in fluoro. If they came in at least five meter lengths in both mono AND fluoro they would be useful AF and I'd use them for swimbait fishing. Sadly most bass anglers are only confused by the Tepas leaders and I imagine sunline will drop the product in the next year or two.1 point -

Man that wrapped Bubba is so nasty man I wish I could swing that much for another one, never thought I'd see one cooler than my toxic day purple one but now I have... Hopefully some day i can get my hands on one like it! Don't think I can part with an eden tho, if any other trade ideas pop into your head or if you end up dropping the price at all feel free to reach out. If not I totally get it, things a gem.1 point -

Amazing bait, it sounds like dominoes. Catches for me, versatile retrieve depending on reel speeds and rod height. Only thing I suggest is adding a 150lb solid ring to the line tie. It will stabilize the bait at higher speeds while keeping the original action.1 point

brootalititties reacted to ikaika for a topic
That would be super helpful if you do get it out on the water to test. If it really can't throw above 3oz I'll have to decide if i just build it as a punching rod or if I dremel a couple inches off the tip and roll the dice for science!1 point -

Bait Specs 8.5" & 4.5oz Owner hooks Casts surprisingly well for a multi joint bait and the splash down isn't that bad either. the paint is amazing, the trouts were painted by eon, clear coat is thick and durable, detail on the face and fins is excellent, tail material seems very durable and semi firm. Bait swims at incredibly slow speeds, like barely moving type slow retrieve, it wakes from a crawl to almost a burn, will go under the surface only a couple inches on a burn, doesn't wash it. on the retrieve when you pause it, the bait will stop forward movement but the head section will do this subtle back and forth movement which is really cool. you can wake it at all speeds, I like the swim on a crawl to slow retrieve and that is what's gotten me bit. the lip is big enough to be able to push its way thru sparse pads and grass and has a nice engraving on the lip. stuck two fish on it this weekend a 2.3 which exploded on it as it swam thru some grass on a slow crawl, as it pushed its way thru. The 4.4 was the most subtle slurp I've seen, bait was passing by a big rock and sucked it down, super good hook placement on the fish. I've had two hits and two hooks ups so happy with that. Thru the bait all saturday and sunday night and shows no signs of hook rash. Think this bait will be a winner as the season goes on, especially in the fall with end of season trout stocks here in New England.1 point
