  7. Up for review is the 2014 Okuma Komodo 350: The low profile Komodo sits proudly at the top of Okuma's lineup... And looks pretty sharp... Featuring an impressive 11 bearing count, And the capacity for big line... It's sure to have some interesting features. Let's take a closer look... There are two colors used to anodize the aluminum components, dark beige and, of course, enthusiast red... Right away the power-sized EVA foam knobs welcome the big bait angler: They measure in at 48mm long! Two stainless steel bearings support each knob... The end caps are aluminum, anodized with red accents. Notice also the threaded insert within the knob. The Komodo's handle and drag star are made from aluminum and are swept back for cranking power... It has red accents within the cut-outs: And rivets and decorative pieces... Whereas the Citrix 350 has a 95mm handle, the Komodo 350 has been upgraded to 100mm: On to the swept drag star: Which has a familiar clicking design: More of the clicking components, along with the spring washers... An overview of all the handle components: The cast control knob clicks for fine tuning: The rest of the clicking components are within the sideplate. The aluminum sideplate features a well decorated machined component, anodized red of course: Which also contains the anti-reverse bearing and its 11 rollers...and has minimal backplay with the drag star tightened! And a stainless steel ABEC-5 Japanese made cast control knob bearing: Measuring in at 8x5x3mm: A spring sits on the bolt that reaches to the braking side plate for increased stability. We have reached the belly of the beast... Now, lets gut this dragon and see what makes it move! All of the metal components seen here are stainless steel... Check out the helically-cut 6.4:1 gears: Also made of stainless steel! Measuring 34mm accross the inner diameter. And 40mm accross the outer diameter. Meanwhile the pinion is made of brass: Clutch and coil springs... Supporting the gear set are a ratchet and pawl to prevent handle backspin: Let's see what the drag washers have to offer... 3 stainless steel washers and 3 carbon drag discs give the Komodo 350 25lbs. of drag! Between the ratchet and gear is an interesting drag disc, material unknown. As for the drive shaft, it too is made of stainless steel! And has a bearing for additional support: The sleeve that presses against the top drag washer: Now we arrive at the spool, neatly anodized. 240yds of 14lb test, measuring 29mm inner diameter: Featuring ABEC-5 Japanese stainless steel bearings, one on the handle side... And the other ABEC-5 on the braking side. Which both measure 11x5x4 mm, and again we have compatibility with Boca spool pin pliers: As well as 6 centrifugal brakes, controlled by a clicking red dial... Which brings us to the Komodo's graphite sideplate: With its optional line clicker for bait fisherman... After unscrewing the long bolt that reaches accross from the handle sideplate, the braking sideplate rotates upward and pulls away from the frame, Revealing the raceway, which provides a contact point for the centrifugal brakes: A look inside the aluminum frame where the spool resides: Pan out just a bit and notice the brass gears that drive the level wind... Which is synchronized to the spool movement, giving more precise control of how line moves on to and off of the spool. Check out the frame as well as the braid friendly Zirconium line guide: The thumb bar has a crisp feel when pressed down... The reel foot is slotted, And cut out for weight reduction: Put it all back together and it measures 145mm from sideplate to knobs: 85mm from front to back: 60mm tall: The Komodo 350 comes ready for battle with big fish. The combination of its drag, line capacity and freespool ability make it big game approved. The cranking power this reel has over big lures as well as big fish fills a spot on the big bait market that few other reels do. Advantages over the Citrix 350 include Okuma's 3 Year Warranty, 100mm handle, stainless steel gear, higher bearing count and corrosion resistant coating. The Komodo will be available very soon, coming in at $219.99 with the option for a single knob power handle at $234.99.
