  1. A 9.5" bait might be the way to go starting out. Good luck with it.
  2. Brah, you've got 4 threads on the first page of this forum that you started about what things you need to build baits and paint. These aren't questions that are being asked for the first time either. You need to do some of your own research, especially for the easier stuff. Tackle Underground is a good place to start. I think most of the guys here would help you out more if they were confident you first tried to help yourself out by researching and learning the basic things on your own. Any other way and it just seems lazy. Sorry if this makes me a dick but you do have to do your homework and research this stuff a bit. Don't use your "free one" on the stuff you can find out yourself with a little bit of effort.
  3. You must ask yourself a serious question when contemplating a bait like this........can you actually throw a 14 1/2" bait on the tackle you own. This is not going to be a 2 or 3 oz or even 6oz bait. The reality is that it will likely be well over 16oz depending on material you plan to use. I'm not trying to be a dream killer but you must consider the effort you will need to put in to a bait vs the feasibility of its actual use and the relative worth of its payoff if it comes to fruition. If it is your first bait, I'd recommend a smaller project so you can learn the ins and outs of lure making before taking on a larger project. If you FUBAR a larger bait the first time making it you might have more waste on your hands than you want to deal with. That in itself might take your confidence away. Again, I am not trying to discourage you. I just think you might be better suited to start a little smaller first time out.
  4. Looking to move these baits to finance another project. I would be interested in a trade for a newer model Shimano left handed casting reel.....size 51, 151 or 201. These baits are in very good condition. They have been fished. I replaced the carbon fiber joint pins with 14 gauge SS wire. I feel it is extremely strong and gives the baits excellent flexibility. I do this mod on almost every bait I own regardless of brand. I'm not interested in endless messages. Send me photos of what you have to offer and lets get it done.
  5. Still have both. Interested in a Shimano lefty newer series reel or maybe a SS Shad.
  6. I use my dremel at low speed. It cuts well. If you are impatient and use the high speed, I think it generates too much heat and is not as precise. I finish the lips and tails off with a butane torch.
  7. Could use some cash to finance some other projects. These baits are for sale. I might consider a trade for a newer model left handed Shimano casting reel 51 or 201 series. Shad Baby Wake Gill Floater I replaced the original carbon fiber joint pins with 14 gauge wire on both baits.
  8. I am so in for this....awesome job doing it....Merry Christmas to all.
  9. I found out that RP40 is pretty similar to the Amazing Casting Resin by Alumilite....but it is much cheaper. ....for those that didn't know.
  10. I suck at getting these through a release.
  11. I am currently using the Amazing Casting resin, I really like it. I hope RP-40 is about the same. I saw a few crank baits made with RP-40 so I am beginning to think it is at least pretty close to the Amazing Casting resin.
  12. between alumilite casting resin and RP-40? I would like to get alumilite in 1/2 gallon or more qty but it doesn't seem to be available in that size. I am looking for something that produces a rigid product for crankbait/swim bait bodies with a 10 to 12 minute de mold time. Any advice would be appreciated.
  13. I've personally owned the 806, the handle is giant. I measured it for the guy I sold it to. I think it was 22 inches? The 806 was possibly too heavy for what I wanted to do with it. It will be good for big Hudds though. Some might disagree with me but my opinion on swim bait rods is that the things that make standard bass fishing rods very expensive matter a lot less when you are chucking a half pound of plastic. I personally would look at Irod or go back to the Guide series. There is nothing wrong with a custom or Dobyn's, but you can be successful without them.
  14. The clay anchors the model so it doesn't move.
  15. You can make a mold out of any pvc silicone. I've alumilite and standard rtv(room temp vulcanization) silicone. If you are looking to make a 2pc mold, get yourself some sculpting clay....the type that does not dry out. Press the wooden or plastic "model" into the clay so that it sits in there halfway. Press clay up against the model to remove any air........cover in silicone let set for 18hrs. 18 hrs later.......Remove clay from model but make sure you do not remove the model from the pvc, you want to keep it air tight. Next slather on a mold release (I use Vaseline) to the pvc...the reason is pvc will bond to pvc. After making sure you have covered all of the pvc, pour up a new batch and make the other part of the mold by covering the exposed half of the model.......make sure to include pouring holes and vents. 18 hours later....separate and viola, you are gtg.
