we use to fish a bunch of those, and you are correct it is very entertaining to say the least. it was also funny a jon boat would go up against 40k-60k boats. I saw a old guy towing his jon boat with his Cadilla to the one. The so called Pro guys laughed at him. He blow them away at weigh in. He came over to me and stared talking about how he used to toss musky baits for bass back in the day. I asked him what he caught all his fish on and he showed me a beat up old wood bait that looked like a punker.

I fish a few of them every year. Its a $10 buy in You get 4hrs to fish and big fish takes all. If a bunch of people show up they will pay out 1 or 2 more spots some times. They do a side 50/50 drawing. Its fun me and my friend are the only ones that toss swimbaits. We get some weird looks and they laugh us. But we are the only ones bringing 5lb + fish to the scales.

Did you weight it and try it with the split rings an hooks? If it still flops over your going to need to weight it. You can use drop shot sinkers or Carolina weights. Drill a hole a little bigger then your weight epoxy it in. You can use wood putty to level it out with the wood. When i weight my floating baits i put a gum band around where i think the weight should go tie a piece of line from the bottom. I put weights on the line till i get it to where i want it to float. You can move the band around also. Its a easy way to see where the weight should go and you know how much weight you need. More weight in the front part of the bait works better i think.

Cant wait to get up to New York and Erie. I fly fish for them but i want to see if i can stick one on the 316 shad and 6" trout. I watched a brown eat a steelhead smolt one time, and caught a steelhead with a smolt in its belly about 8" long.

I use devcon 2ton expoy to coat and hold every thing in place. You can buy a piece of lexan at home depot and make a bill/tail. All wood floats different some are more buoyant then others. Some are easier to work with you will find what you like.As of tools sounds like your good. I would get a set of carving knives, different grit sand paper's,and some wood flies. You can pick up other tools later if you like making baits. As for srew eyes you can pick them up at jannsnetcraft on the web. I use the ones for musky baits. If you need help you can pm me. I made a few baits and i am still working on some.
