It seems to be about presentation and profile of the bait more than the actual pattern of the bait. Confidence is also key though so if you don't have confidence throwing a trout patterned bait, maybe reach for a golden shiner patterned hudd. Also, I would strongly suggest watching southern trout eaters if you haven't already.
