  1. Got out this morning in between the summer storms we're having here in Northern IL; hit up this tiny neighborhood pond where I've not yet thrown the rat because the water's so small and shallow I figured the rat's too big and obnoxious for this spot. But the weather's so perfect right now I thought What the heck, let's send it! Fished the entire thing in an hour, no bites until I get to the last section (SE corner, the non-windblown side). The eat was so subtle I almost felt it before my eyes registered it; the fish slurped it off the surface, no blowup at all, kinda the way a trout takes a fly. Weird, especially for how big the rat is. He went 18.25" and 2.69lbs. Caught my first rat fish back in May I think, and plenty since then, but I'm still not over this bite, it is so fun.
  2. Storms came through northern IL last night, my neighborhood pond is all blown out and chocolatey. Decided, what better time to throw the big rat, right? Got out a little before first light and I wasn't disappointed, they were ON it--nothing big, but my first rat fish ever. Got the Spro 50 for Christmas and I've been waiting for the wake bite to heat up, hope it's here for good! Last bite and fight was so violent he ripped the tail completely off, man when they want it they want it. Can't believe how small the smallest one was, greedy lil dude ha. (Don't hate on my homemade big board!)
