Got out this morning in between the summer storms we're having here in Northern IL; hit up this tiny neighborhood pond where I've not yet thrown the rat because the water's so small and shallow I figured the rat's too big and obnoxious for this spot. But the weather's so perfect right now I thought What the heck, let's send it! Fished the entire thing in an hour, no bites until I get to the last section (SE corner, the non-windblown side). The eat was so subtle I almost felt it before my eyes registered it; the fish slurped it off the surface, no blowup at all, kinda the way a trout takes a fly. Weird, especially for how big the rat is. He went 18.25" and 2.69lbs. Caught my first rat fish back in May I think, and plenty since then, but I'm still not over this bite, it is so fun.
