  1. I've recently started experimenting with Polyurethane. It allows me to do a few things that wood doesn't so I decided to tweak the Undertaker. I'm super please with how it came out and its a big change to the original. #1: I added a Buoyancy Control Chamber so the lure can be be changed from suspending (the default) to either floating or to various sink rates, in under a minute. #2: I managed to increase the glide length by making a few small tweaks> Changed the swim from a tight wiggle to a nice 3 foot glide. #3: I increased stability by adding a small back spoiler (removable/replaceable). That further increases glide length and it can be worked at high speed. #4: Getting further UNDER, a combination of the increased glide and stability allows the Undertaker to get around 2m under cover. There are a few other positives, like being able to fish it Twerk Style or even Butch Brown rig it, but getting it under cover is the main design feature of the Undertaker. I wanted something to swim deep into floating cover, to where the big girls live unmolested by most lures. The wooded Undertaker has given me a few PBs and I have very high hopes for the new improved version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzsczInuuP4

    6kg Catfish

My wife and I took the tent and headed for a 2 day trip on a river a few hours drive away. The bass were weary and tough to catch but it was great to be out. Day One taught me that if your rod touches a piece of electric fencing (strung across the river by a crazy farmer) you are going to dance. Late on Day Two I swung my 7 inch Undertaker under a overhang and it got absolutely smoked by a 6kg beady eyed Spawn of Satan - also known as the Sharptooth Catfish. It almost jolted the rod out my hand. After the initial viscous strike it surged down into the current and put up a massive fight. I'm not a fan of these beasts, as they decimate the bass during spawn, but they do put a serious bend in your rod. Sarah even took over fishing for a while and had fun being pulled around in the kickboat.
  3. My wife and I were invited to fish a private lake. We could only get there about 2 hours after sunrise which was a pity. No wind and perfect water clarity, visibility down to about 6 feet. I was soon getting followers on most of my swimbaits but no commitment. That’s perfect for a dating website but frustrating in the swimbait world. After Sarah waved her 7th fat butterball bass in the 4-5lb range at me I succumbed and tied on a creaturebait. We caught plenty of very decent fish but still nothing interested in biting the swimbaits. At about 4pm the wind got up and I decided to give the Undertaker another good go. Perfect Spot: there was a little island forming a nice saddle with a point about 200 yards away, a shallow ridge with deep water either side. I cast out from the island towards the point and worked the Undertaker slowly back. 2nd cast and I was rewarded with the sight of 3 good fish cruising after the bait. 3 casts later and I hooked into a fattie but she shook the hook quickly. Game on! A short while later I though I got a good knock and raised the rod, Nothing! A few turns of the reel and some weigh so I set the hook. Nothing again, but this time not even the lure. I think the fish must have taken the Undertaker on the first knock but swimming towards me, second time must have been the feeling of the line meeting a rock as the break was about 10 yards up the line. Trying to convince myself that that Undertaker was my least favourite I tied on another. If you are scared to loose a bait stay at home! Boom! Perfect fat 5.5lb female smashes the Undertaker on the next cast! I wish I could say I slayed them from then on but she was the only one I managed to land. Lost a few more that came unbuttoned but what a great day.

    Bass in the mist!

Had an awesome day fishing on the weekend. Fished a short section of river. Cold and misty for the first 3 hours then the sun came out, water under 40F so they liked it slow. Most of the fish on the Undertaker but very happy with how my new iRISH WAKE bait preformed. Got some good footage in the morning but dropped my spare battery in the water. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiHpDr7ObZQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiHpDr7ObZQ PS, if anyone can tell me how to get some good music without youtube banning my vid or pasting adds everywhere that would be great.
  5. To stand a chance in The Battle of the Underground I’ll need 10lb at the very least. Considering my PB was 7lb that’s a daunting task. So, with that in mind I set off on Saturday to initiate phase 1 of my BATTLE PLAN : catch few big fish and hopefully increase my PB to get some confidence. After 5 hours on the water without a fish I glided the Undertaker under some floating vegetation and it stopped dead. I set the hooks and was rewarded with my rod tip being dragged into the water. Quick fight and she was in the net. 8.5lb (3.76kg) 24.5inches, with the biggest mouth I have been blessed to see. 5 hours : 1 fish : 100% worth it! Targeting more floating vegetation I managed to land another 3 good fish, including another 6lb that absolutely engulfed the 7" Undertaker. Got a quick clip of her swimming away on instagram if anyone is interested: #crossmanlures

    Bass in the mist

After access to a prime venue was cancelled due to some idiot poaching I put my wife to work organising access to another good venue. Boy did she deliver?! We arrived just before first light. It was cold (at 4’C - under 40’Ferenheit) and misty while we set up the kickboats in the dark. After manhandling the boats over a tricky 2m stretch of floating grass we were on the water. First cast with my new prototype iRISH WAKE bait produced 2 swirls and a few casts later a feisty largie came to the net. It was going to be a good day. The river was lined with a floating vegetation so I switched to the Undertaker quite soon. I was rewarded with a big hit but she came unbuttoned. I changed baits a bit and picked up a fish on a plastic swimbait and weightless fluke, following up another swirl at the iRISH WAKE. Mist was still thick and it seemed to be getting colder so I changed the UNDERTAKERS for a lighter model which did the trick. Working it parallel and a bit under the cover I saw a flash as a decent largie came out and committed. After a quick fight, that my new Dobyns (thanks Anthony) and Calcutta (great traded, thanks Angle) handled with ease, I netted and weighed a great 6.22lb largie. Who can get tired of the elation as you see that big head breach the water for the first time and pleasure of seeing her swim off when you gently release her? I continued to work the UNDERTAKER parallel and under the cover all day and it continued to produce. Nothing bigger than the 6.22 but probably managed a 5 fish bag of at least 23lb. Fishing so close and slow I saw nearly all the fish take. Missed a few but had an absolute blast. Couple of pics attached and uploading a video that I’ll stick in SUTV
  7. I was chatting to a friend about that pros and cons of a new bait he was fishing. Coincidentally I have been working on a bait that had all the pros and none of the cons. It was originally designed to track the bottom by fishing it on a Caroliner rig. It is buoyant but gets pulled to the bottom by Caroliner weight. When retrieved it bounces nicely along or just above the bottom in a tantalizing s-wave. When paused the bait rests horizontally at the height of the leader. If you fish it on an unpegged weight you can control the height the bait rests at and even make it dart to the bottom and float back up a few inches to make it look like it is feeding off the bottom. Turns out that fished weightless it make a great wake bait as well. Jointed wooden glidebait, 130cm / 5.5inches and 2 ounces (wrapped/foiled). I placed the hooks on top to avoid snagging. They are held in place with a simple harness system (patent pending lol). Swim video at : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJSqkXRnvo8
  8. Not my fish but caught on a swimbait I made. Just over 5 pounds / 2.3kg on an Undertaker (Carp). I finally got convinced to make a bait for someone here in South Africa. A few days later and I received this picture and a text saying “Two of these followed the bait. I saw them and paused. Gave it a small jerk. The swimbait turned around and looked them in the eye!! Haha then she inhaled it!! Right in front of me.†It's his first swimbait fish. We might just have a new adict
  9. I needed to find some $$s to fund my first swimbait rod, a Dobyns 806. VERY GENEROSLY organised by a SU member to whom I owe a great deal of gratitude. For the record I'm anti-drugs but I do know someone with an addiction... Like most on SU, he's a total Swimbait-a-holic (with a particularly fondness for Golden Shiners) so I waved this in front of his nose. He kindly agreed to take it. I suspect the purchase was made out of generosity towards the seller and it is appreciated. 7", hand carved from wood and fold wrapped. It should be landing States-Side soon.
  10. Still over 2lb away from getting a DD but I did catch 14.5lb in 5 casts. Wrote about it in the Got’em Section. Here’s the vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOtGdp1UxsY
