You can have all the right terminal tackle and line, but if the rod is too stiff then you start pulling hooks and loosing fish. I've had plenty of tackle failure in the past. Opened split rings, straightened hooks and broken leaders. But, I can tell you most could of been avoided by not fishing such a tight drag or stiff rod. I’m running a Dobyns 867 and Curado 300K for my “bigger” glides. 65lb braid to about 6ft of 20lb mono leader. Interestingly, a lot of the striper that I hook come up and wallow on the surface. I haven’t had many occurrences of them destroying hardware, but I can definitely see them lock up my bait sometimes if it has fixed hook hangers. If they start a death roll on top and wrap my line around those hooks I know the fight will be over sooner than I’d like. Great discussion everyone, thanks for sharing! Delta_fisher
If your getting short strikes something isn’t right with the way your working the bait, the color, tide, size etc. if your having trouble landing, you need to do what you can to increase the land ratio. Assist cord helps greatly with death roll. Having a parabolic rod to let them head shake and roll. stripers are extremely powerful and will torque the bait against their face and bend out hooks with a quickness. don’t forget, a lot of times a striper will slap at a bait to injure it or to just see what’s up with it. So it may not actually be a bite in the first place. Morgan Y and StriperAddict
nightowl55
When I hook um I keep cranking, if it starts to pull drag I know it's not a green bass it's either a striper or cat. Once it pulls drag I hold the rod high and keep a bend in the rod after that it's just luck and not getting stuck with a hook in my hand.
