coreyyarish Posted August 8, 2023 Report Share Posted August 8, 2023 Finally "perfected" my shad glide after working off and on for 2 years. Its a 7.5 inch bait with the tail and weighs around 3.2 ounces. Was looking for a good choppy action that I can still fish slow if needed which I think I achieved. Still working on a way to consistently put the ballast lead in the correct area in the mold. What I have found is to take 1/16oz weights and attach them to the hook hangers in the correct area. Also looking for recommendations on a clear coat for the paint and also what to use for a flexible tail. I made a silicone mold and am using some construction adhesive to form a flexible tail. It works and is cheap but isn't pretty. Overall besides from a few bubbles in the mold and rough spot that can be sanded out I'm happy with the way it looks and how it swims. I haven’t experimented much with flexible tails myself, so some other members should be able to give you some good advice there. For clear coat, I don’t have a rotisserie yet so I can’t use the normal epoxies that others do. I’ve been using KBS Diamond aerosol spray instead. https://www.kbs-coatings.com/diamondfinish-clear-aerosol.html I’ll add how I’ve been using it in case it’s something you’re interested in trying. Keep the spray can 12”-18” away from the lure, then go over it in quick, thin passes. If you try to get a thick coat at one time it’ll run pretty badly, which means you’ll have to apply at least 3-5 thin coats to get a solid, smooth finish over the entire lure. But once you give it 36-48 hours to completely cure it’s been a pretty solid clear coat! Good luck and let us know when you catch some on them! They sell pigments on Amazon, I even mix the colors to make different shades. It’s durable and flexible. I have secured mine with pins and have never had one come out, but there is silicone glue available on Amazon too. I tested it and it works well.
