Primus
In addition to what's already been mentioned the 6" River to Sea Bottom Walker is a vey affordable productive option that you may want to try for slow rolling in deep water during the summer. ICSpots
+1 for the idea of going with a top/middle/bottom approach. Even if you had more money to spend, I recommend limiting yourself to three baits to start with. This will allow you to learn as much as possible about fishing each bait in a variety of situations. idbass
For a mid column approach would it be better to go with a soft bait now like a ROF 5 or Rising Son or just go directly to a hardbait such as a FS or TT. Is there one style that may be easier to learn on?

Is there one style that may be easier to learn on? If I don't know the terrain I'm fishing like the back of my hand, I always go with a soft bait. I swimbait fish from the shore on a budget and can't afford to lose too many lures. I like hudd 68s, matt's T-series, and of course the old stand-by ROF5 hudd. If I know I'm not likely to lose a bait, I love me some triple trouts! Also the slow-sink hardgill! Hardbaits are more fun as someone else mentioned.
