Jay_Paternostro
Hey guys, I live in Connecticut and we're having extremity warm weather for February. Some of the lakes are already half melted, which means ill be throwing swimbaits on them in a week or two. I usually start throwing swimbaits a month before spawn when the water temp is about 40 or 45 degrees, but I noticed some GIANTS are caught starting at as soon as the ice melts all the way to the spawn. Id like to start chasing the big girls as early as I can this year! That being said: I never usually target bass when the water is super cold like this (just after Ice out) so any advice would be greatly appreciated. What parts of the lake are the bass in? Is it better to fish on sunny days this time of year? How deep/shallow are the bass at ice out? How early do you guys start night fishing? Does this fishing become way more productive at 40 degrees instead of 32? The lake I’m mostly going to fish is kind of odd, its very weedy and its deepest part is 16' with an average depth of 7'. I do not have a fish finder or sonar, just a little john boat and a trolling motor. Water is pretty murky/stained as well, so slow rolling the hudd might be hard because of the extremely weedy bottom. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! bigpoppabass
Windblown coves with weeds or rock. Yes go with soft plastics. I always liked my castaic catch 22 ss. Savage gear has a similar offering....If you are fishing stocked trout lakes, it is tough to beat a trout monster jack senior waked twitched and paused. You can get em from eBay cheap. Brutal hits on em.
253caster
Dont rule out a glide bait especially in a shallow lake like that. Im guessing there isnt much hard bottom so throw whatever baits you can work the slowest over the weeds and give the occaisional pause if they dont want a straight retrieve. Sounds like a lake I fish a lot this time of year. peter_the_fox
drewmoniz
I'm in RI and dudes are already catching them on wakebaits lol. This weather is bananas for February. I'd go with a glide or slow rolling soft plastics. But don't hesitate to try slow twitching a wake, especially in shallow waters.
