for me it is a combo of size and story behind it, size wise my benchmarks for NY are

8lb largie

6lb smallie

we don't have spots

i say its a combo of size and story because i did get a replica of my first "big" bass caught at 9 yrs old at 20" and 5-6lbs, that fish is still the most important fish catch to me as it was the fish that started it all, i have no regrets on getting the replica

The coloration on that largemourh is gorgeous! Great looking replicas, I'll have to check him out!

Thanks!

They look better in person.  Dave Campbell is the man!  I did hours of research online before I went with him.  His name came up several times as being one of if not the best in the country.  If I can get a largemouth over 13lb or a smallie over 7lb, he will be getting my business again.......!

Insane detail! Awesome looking bass. One of the coolest largies ive seen!

Thanks man!

She was almost as round as she was long.  She was 26" long and had a girth of almost 22"!

If I'm going to get a mount, it's probably going to be the real thing so it would have to be a truly special fish. I don't like the idea of having a mold of someone else's fish on my wall.

LM: 15lbs

Spot: 13lbs

Smallie: 10lbs

Never seen a 10lb smallie, but I've definitely watched the other 2 behind my glides! I will get a replica of my Bassmaster record spot when I move into my first house.

I would atleast get your fish molded to get a replica, replicas look better (my opinion) and last longer, and if you let your fish be molded that mold would be able to be used by many other people

Agreed, Conner.  And for the record that picture of you as a boy with that bass is pure, captured joy...just AWESOME.

Incredible size will always beget a story to go with it, but often an average fish may have a terrific moment a person wants to immortalize.  I spoke at length with the individual who is doing my mount and he told me he has had people mount average size sunnies, because they were their kids first catch on their own.  Or, an average size catch from an outing with a very sick family member.  In these instances a quality framed picture of the individuals/fish alongside the mount  really brings the memory of the moment together.

Regarding sheer size, I'll throw in my 2 cents here in the northeast as a NJ angler.  I always said that if I cracked an 8lb fish (largemouth) I would mount it (replica).  That's truly the mark of an exceedingly rare fish and an individual may, or may not ever see a largemouth of that size again.

To the original thread starter; I think it also depends on if you just WANT a mount.  I know I always loved seeing the good size mounted fish whether in the local bait shop or rustic restaurant.  It doesn't have to be the end all be all biggest fish.  Maybe you just want to build the atmosphere in your own man cave/fisherman's room.

The fish I'm having a replica done of actually missed my own implied threshold by 1 oz and was 7lbs 15oz.  But, I realized I was capturing more than a number.  The euphoria and exuberance of years of focused, hard work paying off in a fish of that caliber WAS what was being mounted.  I often think now if and when I catch one bigger, I will also mount it, but will it carry the same sentiment as that "breakthrough" fish did?  We shall see.

In my area, and in my opinion, it needs to be a teener. But any DD is gonna look really good.

For spotted bass in CA I’d say 8 lbs.

I think I'm right there with you. For CA standards has to be a teener Largie or 8+ Spot.

I would personally never skin mount a personal best bass...she can't grow bigger and be enjoyed further if she's dead. I'd go with a replica or perhaps even more preferably invest in a camera to try catching the moment on video. I learn a lot by going through old catch footage.

To answer the original question though, a bass would have to be in the teens before I even consider having a replica made here in CA. And that's saying something considering I haven't even broken the 8lb mark.

In my neck of the woods the trophy "benchmarks" are:

LM - 10lb

SM - 6lb

Spot - 6lb

I too would only do a replica.  Here are pics of my PB replicas, a 12lb 8oz largemouth and a 6lb 4oz smallie.  Dave Campbell did both fish, he does phenomenal work!

Those look amazing!!!!! My mark is a 9-10lb fish and up. But my PB is 7 so I may never get a mount..if I did I’m doing a replica.

Appreciate it!

A replica is definitely the way to go...  The fish still lives and the replica mount never yellows/peels/fades.

If my fish are still alive and well, the smallie is probably in the 8lb class now and my largemouth is probably in the 14lb+ class, knocking at the door of the TN state record.  Plus, they would still be in the lake for another angler to hopefully catch and get their PB.  That adrenaline you get when that PB hits the net is unreal.  I've got too much respect for the trophy sized fish to kill them, watching both of my PB's swim away was awesome.  I got plenty of pics and videos of each fish to remember them along with the replica mounts.
