Swimbait Review: Lowbrow Mini

The Lowbrow Mini is a 2 pc resin Wake n Crank style rat, and this particular bait happens to be the floating model. My fishing partner and buddy David Spielberger is on the rod for this Review, and I am behind the camera. The Mini comes in at 2 oz , 5.25” at the body, and 10.5”  with the tail included.

The Mini is the smaller if the Lowbrow Rats, and shows off a very fluid and natural swim on the straight retrieve. A back and forth head knock, along with some head roll, gets the bait swimming along as the rear section  and tail swims in a natural in fluid fashion. A small but present V wake trails the bait, and a subtle resin click can be heard as well. You can also slow the rat down to about a crawl, providing a finesse look with a slightly muted badk and forth swim.

The Mini walks with ease, turning on itself 180 degrees with each rod pull. A harder snap will cause the bill to catch water a bit, so I'd recommend starting with easier rod twitches in a slow and consistent manner. David also liked to use what he calls a "Speed Walk", essentially short and fast rod tip twitches with the rod horizontal to the water. This retrieve allows you to fish the bait fast on the surface, as it will crank down on a straight retrieve with any speed. Expiramentation always seems to produce some of these lesser known retrieves, so have fun with your baits and think outside the box.

Beyond about a medium slow straight retrieve, the Lowbrow Mini becomes a crankdown, and will get down approx 2 ft on a medium cast. The bait cranks with ease, and the action becomes slightly tighter. Again, the action is very fluid as the rear section swims in a tight S pattern. The Mini will accept quite a bit of speed and stays true throughout the retrieve. You can also pause the bait and twitch it subsurface, giving you an underwater walk of sorts before getting back on the reel.

For the Mini, David used a Leviathan Heavy, paired with an Antares MD DC and 20 lb big game. You could easily drop down to a lighter rod if that is your preference. Mono or copoly would certainly be a solid choice, along with braid. If you intend to crank down more often (or have the suspending model), then a fluro line selection may be the way to go.

Thanks for joining, see ya next week!
