KGB King (Original)
hokey and 5 others reacted to Helolure78 for a topic
Alright, got a cool piece here. I have an original KGB King that I am open to offers on. Feel free to do your own research as I did mine before acquiring this bait. This is a pre-release version of the KGB King/11” chad. This original version is what the latest generation of Kings was built to match. It is my understanding that these baits were likely given to friends only and never officially released for sale. The ones for sale I believe were first sold sometime in late 2017 and those are often refered to as the original kings (but this version came before). In my struggles to obtain the previous generation of Kings, I acquired this from an individual who was the original owner and outlined the history of the bait (if seriously interested, I would be happy to share the history). This bait has been fished, I have fished it and it shows via the rash (no issues, cracks, chunks of resin missing etc.). I have been able to locate more kings over the last two years so this one does not get fished as much (nostalgia reasons). That said, I know there are collectors out there so I am open to offers. Really the only trades I am interested is potentially more of the previous generation kings (to fish a little more peacefully without stressing of a cast off). I am in absolutely no hurry to get rid of this bait and have no issues in continuing to fish it but figured as popular as this swimbait game has become and the amount of collectors out there, I would put it out for offers. Again, feel free to validate anything I stated as I am not a historian but have been around for a while and researched this bait extensively. I appreciate your time! Tom6 points -

Close quarters fishing, atleast that is what draws me to Calico and Spotted Baybass. I fish from the shore so my experience may differ from others, but I am basically pitching and flipping into holes in the kelp, dragging swimbaits over the canopy, or swimming them on the edge of the kelp for a very visilual bite and an exciting form of fishing. Additionally, calicobass also take all forms of lures including frogs, big swimbaits, craws and cranks, however unlike lmb, they do so all year. Feel like punching mats in January? Head to the kelp. That is what keeps me stoked on them. As far as gear, I hear heavy is necessary but I have only been broken off due to me being lazy and not fixing my knots when I need to. Up until last March I only fished 16lb floro, now I do 30-40lb braid to 20-25 lb floro. I presume guys go bigger on gear because yellow tail and white seabass share the same hunting grounds as calico, and you do not want to be undergunned if one of those comes for your lure. Personally I have caught 7lb calicos on 100 size reels, but 200 is my preferred size, and I use 300s when throwing larger lures--not because I need a big reel to fight a calico. Again, my experience and opinion is formed from years of surffishing calicos, which is alot different than getting them on a boat. Regardless, we are both getting them in nasty cover, pulling them out of heavy kelp, and pulling them across mussel beds. My gear is not as heavy as others, but still in that punching rod+ category. If you ever get the chance to come to CA, definitely book a guided calico trip.3 points

Short Swimbait Rods Part Deux
Jon P reacted to Cookingandfishing for a topic
I've read the other thread on short combat-style SB rods, very much interested in the Expride 66XH, though a couple of posters said it wasn't quite parabolic enough for treble baits. I'm also looking at the Daiwa Black Label LG 6111H+FB-SB, which at 6'11 seems a more reasonable length than 6'6 or even shorter...does anyone have experience with this rod? Aiming to throw 1.5oz up to 4.5oz, rod is rated to 5oz, so on paper it looks doable. Any other suggestions on a sub 7 foot rod that will fish a K9 comfortably I'm all ears.1 point -

Short Swimbait Rods Part Deux
MountainMan83 reacted to Jon P for a topic
I've been ogling the Valkyrie VKC66XH that someone had mentioned in another thread. From what I hear it has a very parabolic load up for a short rod making it more suitable for fishing big hard baits. It also has similar stats to the short rod I use right now, the legit design WSC65XXH. I love that rod and I still contend that it's the most fun rod I own, but the rod is a bit on the fast side for a hard bait rod so I use soft mono to compensate for the action and a fast reel to pick up as much line as possible. You still get relatively poor hooksets outside of thirty meters and if you hook a fish at the end of a long cast the success rate of actually landing the fish is somewhat poor since the combination of short and fast action isn't a great mix for fighting fish. Thankfully most of the fishing I do with this rod is in the 5-10 meter range where the actual fight is pretty brief and you can just horse the fish to the net.1 point -

The 12” model is an exact copy of the hinkle trout joint. Andrew called him out in 2014. Because of that I have zero interest in ever supporting them.1 point -
Shimano Bantam 168XH. Totally awesome rod. Have an Antares MD on it and fish everything from a TK to a Phoney Shad on it. Whoever came up with this rod should design a slightly heavier 7'3 rod for 2-8 oz baits. Same kind of design and bend.1 point

Def not a bad glide for the price. Also worth mentioning that they’re more of a slow wide glide, doesn’t seem like you can get too aggressive or “chop” them or else they blow out. Not sure how you prefer to fish a glide for calico but something to keep in mind as well. Tight lines.1 point

Brown on the TK!
CaliBassin reacted to ThatKidInNY for a topic
Over the past year or so I had been wanting to try targeting big trout with swimbaits. Unfortunately I’m in the frozen tundra for school most of the time and only get opportunities to fish for trout on winter break. It took 4 trips but was well worth it. This fish came on my third cast of the day. I stopped to check my drag 1/4 of the way into the retrieve, looked up, and saw the fish flash on the bait. I knew it was possible but to be honest I was not expecting to catch a Brown. I figured it would be a Laker bite. I didn’t get any measurements on this fish, as we were too amped up to remember. JENKINS CHANNEL on YouTube was a large inspiration that motivated me to try to do this in the states. He makes great quality trout fishing videos out of Japan. Anywho, I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!1 point -

Most of the time I’m using a wrap but when I’m bank fishing with soft baits I use the deep Plano 3700 with some slight modifications. It works equally as well with hard baits but they tend to make noise when walking. I eventually Plan on adding some foam to the bottom and lid to deaden the sound some.1 point
