  1. Granted I have never fished in Canada, but I have done quite a bit of night fishing for walleye in PA, and that was single digits so here is what I have learned. Personally I don't like waterproof gloves, if I know for certaint my hands will be getting wet I either take my gloves off or wear latex gloves underneath. Always use wool. Wool will still insulate when wet. I have some fleece lined wool gloves I love. I am sure some other guys can give you more advice, Jesse has been night fishing in Maine I am sure he has some good glove recommendations
  2. You have to remember that Travis and I live in the mountains of NC not the flat land. These are by far the highest mountains east of the Mississippi. It was 26-27 at my house the last two mornings and I had 3 inches of snow yesterday. This is coming from a yankee, I was born and raised in PA till I joined the military so trust me, its not as warm here as everyone thinks. It is consistently colder here than in PA in the summer. The NC state record is definitely 15lb 14oz. I have met Phil Cable who has the Jordan Lake record of like 14-6 and a few other guys with mid teen fish in the piedmont, they were almost all 20 years ago or in the spawn bedfishing or both. As for shocking up 15-17lb bass, Chris I know we texted about this but I will say it again, there are lots of things wrong with that story. 1. I have heard it about literally every "big fish" lake in the piedmont. Jordan, Harris, Falls, Michie, Bond, Cane Creek, you name it. 2. Where are the pics? Because my better half is a biologist that used to work extensively in fisheries I know a good many of they guys that shock. They always have a camera. Also they rarely see big fish so they get really excited when they do, If you follow their FB page you will see they freaked out about shocking a 20lb striper, they posted pictures of that thing like 30 times. None of this is to say though that I don't think our lakes can produce high teen fish, I mostly fish in NC, SC, and GA. Randall has a damn near 16 from GA, and I know guys that have 14's in NC and SC. Most of the guys I know with mid teen fish, say they have seen MUCH bigger fish, and these are guys that seriously know big fish. There are several lakes in the mountains here that I would bet money on have a 17+ in them somewhere. To briefly address the original topic. California has more DDs swimming around for certain, but me, I could care less. Lakes in Mexico probably has more than Cali, and I KNOW lakes in South Africa do. I think even Don would have trouble if a stick from S. Africa started competing on here. Honestly the swimbait fishing here is leaps and bounds better than it is just east of here out of the mountains, its like two different worlds. So do Travis and I have an edge over my buddies Chris and Dave from the piedmont? Yes, but at the same time Dave has won what like 2 tourneys? Of course Travis has won several as well. No its not completely equal at all, but I doesn't have to be. Its just for fun, I just like catching big fish. Which I don't get to do nearly often enough. (btw Cam I would take a 7+lb smallie like you have over a DD LM every day of the week, even though it probably won't win a tourney, I would be way more stoked about that. Im going to try for one this winter in TN)
  3. The long shank is my favorite part about the gammys. The gap on the 2/0 bronze round bend gammy is the same as a owner st36 1/0 it just has a much longer shank. I am surprised more people don't use them, I know a few sticks do but most people sleep on them. I agree that the gammy is a great hook for slammers, I started putting them on slammers years ago after reading about guys on Calfishing recommending those hooks. TW didn't carry 2/0 for a long time until some smart guy asked them too on their forum Otherwise they would be on more than 5-6 of my baits
  4. Depends on the bait, I use owners on almost everything. I use pretty much all of them for different things 36,46,56, and 66. I don't like the 41s and never used the 58s. Some baits gets gammy round bends and I used 2x gammy round bends to Butch rig hudds, they break a lot bending them though.
  5. Hey look it's my picture from page 1 of this thread
  6. Call me crazy but I am pretty sure Bonesaw was getting his down into the 8 foot area, but he was using 15lb flouro if I recall correctly. I have not thrown either of mine in a while. I have both the original and 2x. As previously said they definitely have a hell of a wake.
  7. I have the opposite perspective on the s-waver. To me the swaver is WAAAAY to slow sink. Even adding weight to it, it is pretty difficult to keep the 200 off the surface. I like them both for cheap glide baits, the s waver is good for a really slow glide, if you take and shave off some of the joint. The savage gear does a lot better at a faster pace.
  8. Thanks guys, I guess I forgot to put, if you didn't see her in the tourney she was 8-2. As far as what is all over her, fairly certain it is a horrible case of "red sore disease"
  9. Yeah, definitely do this at a minimum. But I just had to rebuild my carb even with additives (no big deal because I can do it myself). So I have switched to completely ethanol free, if there is any around you I would go that route
  10. Haven't fished in two weeks or so, and can't for another week. I am going crazy here so I will post my last decent one from last month. Most of you have seen this ugly lady already, but I haven't posted it here. Hopefully Travis and I can stick a few this size next time out.
  11. Not a chance. The lateral line picks up on vibrational frequencies and other mechanical stimuli such as pressure changes, not changes in the magnetic field. Cartilaginous fish are the only ones that would pick up on magnetic stimuli using electroreceptors called ampullae of lorenzini Catfish have electroreception
  12. In my experience with magnets, the hook will get knocked off the bait a lot. I don't find paperclips nessessary either to be honest, if you compress the bait a bit before you sink the hook it will hold nice, tight, and clean, just like a BB rig.
  13. Just to let everyone know nothing Jerry makes is poured by roboworm. The small bvds and skts were awhile back but that hasn't been the case for a long time. Jerry is a one man show. Great suggestions for glueing around the bill. I've had soft tools last for a long time and some start to split at the mouth right away. A little mend it on the split and back in business. Thanks for clearing that up Danny, that's just what it says on tackle warehouse and what several people that I thought knew what they where talking about said.
  14. It's not spray on but a lot of guys used to use aristocrat liquid glass to seal up their baits, 2-3 coats. Can't remember if they thin it or not. Rob Belloni was all about that stuff. I just roll with it personally, no paint bare wood, still lays into the fish
  15. Its a very good bait if you go through the steps to take care of it. First thing I do is cut open all those air bubbles and pour new plastic in to fill them. Then take and get some super glue to attached the soft plastic to the hard body. Do this through the opening by the mouth around the top and bottom, this is the most crucial step in making this bait last. Next add a split ring to the front, and I like just a single 2/0 hook. Never missed a fish, or felt the need for a trailer. Depending on when it was made will effect the durability also, the older ones where made of a much tougher plastic, the newer ones are poured by robo-worm and SUPER soft, mend it is your friend with those ones.
  16. This should say wouldn't*
  17. I personally would want to be trying to drive home the hooks on an 8" punker at the end of a cast with a 795. I throw my punker on a stiff rod, loomis swbr 956
  18. You can spray paint or hand pain, acrylic will stay on the best. Just make sure not to paint the point down to the barb. As far as hyperwires, i use size 5,6 and,7 but size 6 is handsdown the most used for me.
  19. Sorry I completely forgot to do this a few trips, my slow sink was an ROF 8
