  1. I did a search for this topic and it didn't turn up much information. Does anyone know anything about those baits or have first hand knowledge of them? They look like a great idea with the ballast/depth system. I looked at them on Tackle Warehouse and there aren't any reviews so I figured I would start here. Thanks
  2. There's a guy who has one for sale just a few posts above yours. May be worth looking into.
  3. Dobyns 796 would be a good choice. Short handle with some tip but enough A$$ to get hooks in a fish and get them in the boat
  4. I searched for this in the forum and couldn't find what I was looking for. Have any of ya'll fished the topshelf 7 inch deep runner line thru? I was wanting to know the rate of fall of that bait and can't find it posted anywhere on here or the internet for that matter. Just wanting some input on them from some people who have thrown them. Thanks
  5. I've had bad luck with the cul-em-rite and the x tool. All of them say that 3 or 4 fish are the same weight or you weigh the same fish twice in a row and get a different weight. I tried replacing batteries and that didn't seem to help either. I bought a rapala scale and so far it seem to be working for me and if you weigh a fish twice you get the same result each time.
  6. I also think that as fisherman we get to the point where we want to catch them on what we want to throw instead of what they want to eat. Like sticking with swimbaits when the guy in the boat is killing them on a crankbait. I think we're all guilty of that. I know I am. Like stated above by Waynem the best thing to do is shuffle baits around until you find what they want that particular day. It can be a maddening process but the end result is a feeling of accomplishment that feels incredible. There is no magic bait that always works day in and day out. If someone ever figures the magic bait out, please tell us all. LOL. It takes a lot of persistence and patience and the belief that the next cast could produce "the one". For me that belief is what keeps me going and keeps me motivated to keep on grinding. With chunking these big baits we are eliminating the quantity and looking for the quality instead. The urge to catch 100 fish in a day is great, but I would give up the 100 fish days to catch a true giant. To me that giant is what it is all about and to know that I caught it on something that it has more than likely never seen or knowing I made that fish bite my lure when it's seen thousands in its lifetime is the best reward.
  7. I watched the promo video for it too and he said to keep the rod pointed at the bait the whole time. I get the logic behind whacking one asap in very heavy cover, but I also think that maybe you should wait a second until you feel the fish like a top water bite. It's definitely something I'll have to play with and see.
  8. Here are a couple of pics of them. These are the 7 inch
  9. I know the Ignite bait's don't have a hook slot. It's a solid piece of plastic all the way through. I don't know if I'm sold on the hook slot or not to be honest. It's a great idea but I do think it makes the baits tear easier. I guess from a manufacturers standpoint that's a good thing since you have to buy more. LOL. I also agree with the thought that I'll give up durability to get bites on it. I'm also not one that's super brand loyal on baits. rods and reels is a different story, but if a bait is getting bit you can bet your a$$ that I'm fixing to tie one on and throw it. I may be a little stubborn if I know there's a school of fish down there and I want to catch one on said style of bait, but I'm also not too stubborn to switch to something else if the guy in the boat is whacking them and I'm not.
  10. Big Slant, I'm going to try one with the Trokar 10/0 unweighted hook and see how it does. If I get to the river early enough Friday night I'm going to go play with one and see how it does. I'll try and post a video of it so ya'll can see it. Hopefully they'll swim good with the unweighted hook.
  11. I haven't used the ignite bait yet but I will this weekend. I was waiting on hooks to get here from tackle warehouse. The ignite baits are 2 per pack and I think they are about $15 a pack. A local tackle shop carries them and on a whim, my dad ( who doesn't believe in the big bait theory ) bought them and I was proud of him. LOL. There isn't much information on them on the internet or youtube. They sell a jig head to go along with it, but it doesn't look big enough for the bait in my opinion. ( the hook looks too short ) They are using the same head on a 7 and 9 inch bait and I don't think it's big enough for the 7 let alone the 9. The baits look really nice and don't look like a cheap knock off or something just thrown together. They are finished very well and have a lot of colors to choose from. Hopefully they work out well. I may try and get a video of them swimming this weekend. They may turn out to be duds, but like Top Ramen said, they aren't very expensive in the grand scheme of what we all spend for other lures.
  12. So I'm curious if any of the members here have used or heard anything about ignite swimbaits. It looks like it could be a good bait. I just wanted to know if anyone here has any input on them. To me they look a lot like a rising son. They're hand poured and have some good looking colors, so I wanted to get some more info on them if anyone here knows something about them. I searched for this several ways and couldn't find anything so if it has been discussed someone let me know please. Thank You.
  13. In my case with the 68's if I'm fishing about 7 feet or less, I go with a rof5. Anything deeper than that I go with a 12. I fish lakes that have current and I fish them on ledges so for me I like a heavier bait that will stay down. Even with the 12s I have to stop and let it fall back down. I really wish I could get a rof16 for ledges.
  14. I throw a lot of my bigger soft baits on the superduty. Most of the one I throw are 3.5 ounces or less and that reel handles them just fine. As also stated you can sling a bait a country mile on them and for me they hold enough line that I'm not worried about running out or not having enough if I break off a few times.
  15. I agree on this too. If you're going to be chunking hudds and things like that, then get the 806. I like the 796 and am very happy with it, but the extra handle length would be nice for my preference
  16. Thastickybandit is right on the handle length, I believe that I bought that rod from him. LOL. It's a great rod and very sensitive. I throw Bull shads, glides, and some smaller single hook baits on it. It may be just a little stiff for that application, but once you hook a fish, it handles it very nicely.
  17. I've not had smaller thrusts versions under about 80 pounds, but I've run MinnKota and Motorguide and I hands down prefer MinnKota. They are much quieter and don't have that annoying thump when you let off of the pedal. Plus they aren't nearly as heavy when pulling up to store or deploy. That's just my opinion of them. Like I said it's based on the bigger thrust motors though.
  18. I honestly think they're made to look "rough". If you think about a big shad swimming for its life everyday, it's going to get beat up. I think that's exactly what it's trying to mimic. They catch fish for sure. I don't have any fancy painted ones, ( those look F*ING awesome by the way ) but the ones I have work.
  19. I have several Bull Shads in different sizes I bought all brand new. Most of them look the way you're describing them to me as well. It's not a work of art, but they dam sure catch fish. I think the roughness of the bait is kind of the way it is intended to look as well. That's just my opinion anyway. Sling that sucker because they will bite it.
  20. I'm impressed beyond belief that your ranger would hit that with the amount of tackle you carry. Must be doing something right. My dad had a 519 that would run about 78 but he said it rode like a log truck. He had a Mercury on it ( years before Pro XS came out ) and Ranger ended up buying that boat back from him because that motor caused him so much problems. He put 3 power heads on that boat in a span of a month when he fished FLW. P!$$ed doesn't even begin to describe how mad he was at that boat. LOL
  21. I too I saw that too but you can't find them anywhere. I'm assuming that they aren't on the market yet.
  22. Magic Man, My HPDI ( 225 ) on my Z20 ( Hydraulic Plate as well ) would only push that boat tournament loaded with 2 people about 68 or 69. I tried several different props on it and none were better on it than the factory Yamaha prop. I do carry a lot of fishing tackle in my boat so I know that will slow it down. That boat fished good, rode good, and handled great. It just wouldn't run on top end. The Z520 with the E-tec would absolutely fly on top end. Fishing loaded it would run about 75 consistently. I just couldn't rely on that motor to get me back. There were several times that it blew up on the way back when I had a good sack of fish and I wouldn't dare let out of it. Not to mention when the trim motor went out. ( thank goodness I had it all the way down when I stopped ) The Z21 I had with a 250 pro XS would run about 73 tournament loaded. For that heavy b@st@rd I thought that was incredible. I actually miss that boat. I had no problems with it, someone just wanted it worse than me. LOL. On the Triton's I've had, the only one that ran like advertised was a 21HP. That boat tournament loaded would do a little better than 80. It would fly, but in my opinion, it rode like $h!t. With the TRX it's a little bit more of a Ranger ride with the Triton speed. I can get about 74 to 75 consistently of it.
  23. Magic man, You're right I am lucky enough to be in a position that I can trade like I do. I liked that Yamaha, it just wasn't the top end motor a mercury is. I've had great luck out of all my Mercury's. I put a lot of hours on one for sure. In my experience about 2 years is all you get out of one with no trouble. The 2014 I had I was just fixing to pay to extend the warranty and I could trade for not much more than that and I wouldn't have to wait 3 weeks for mine to get fixed. Got two big tournaments coming up in the next 3 weeks. I bought the boat at C&O and they jumped right on getting things swapped over for me so I could fish saturday afternoon and fish a tournament sunday. It's back there now getting the rest of my stuff swapped over this week.
