First attempt at a perch W&C

Today I had a itch to make another wake bait so I got right to it. (After fishing of course lol) I wanted to try something with a different body style, I was thinking a gill or a shiner but then it popped in my head. If perch paint jobs work on gill and shiner baits here in mass, a perch profile would definitely get destroyed!

I found a piece of poplar in the shop and drew out the basic shape of what I wanted and started to thin it and round it out, spent probably around 1 1/2 hours sanding by hand until I got something that I liked. I then cut the bait in half lol.

After cutting the bait in half I started to decide what I wanted to do for my joint. I went with what I’m comfortable with and have confidence in. I then put in my hook hangers and epoxied them in place. For my hardware I used all .072” stainless steel screw eyes that I got from lure parts online. I then put on the first coat of polyurethane and went out pond hoping for a bit to let it dry.

once I got home I poured in my lead and covered up the holes with super thin super glue and baking soda. After putting in the weight I cut out the tail slot and found a loose illude tail that I had sitting around and it just so happened to fit perfectly with the bait! Once everything was cut I did my 2nd coat of polyurethane and while that was drying I started making a few different lips to test out different actions.

this is my second bait that has actually came out the way I wanted it and I will be getting a final picture and swim test video out as soon as possible! If anyone has any tips on making baits please feel free to drop them in the comments! I’m interested in seeing other people’s methods. Thanks for the support and I can’t wait to show y’all what I have next on the agenda! Tight lines everyone!

That's going to get smoked. I make a perch profile glide bait and it does really well for mel in Michigan. I would consider moving the rear hook hanger back a little to keep the hooks from tangling. I've also found with wake and crank style baits I like to keep most if not all of the weight in the front section to get the most tail action. As for the lip, for wake baits the lip should be wider than it is deep to get the best action i've found. Usually I add a quarter inch to each side more than the thickness of the bait and make it 1/8" less deep than the width. From there I adjust based on how it swims.

That's awesome! Congrats on the new PB. Nothing better than catching big fish on something you made. If you haven't yet, make something in a bluegill profile. It's almost cheating some days.

Thanks and I didn’t post it because I didn’t take any pictures during the build but I do have a gill and it slays!
