Balam goes to Cedros Island MX

Just got back from an Epic 6 day trip to Cedros Island in Baja MX. We had really good fishing on Yellowtail, Calicos and some White Seabass. Most of our fish came on surface irons and long rods. (west coast thing).

But, I did pack a few hard baits and they all produced. I got a few calico bass on the Toxic WNC salt version and Triple Trout Salt version, but nothing picture worthy.

The Balam on the other hand was killing em! We had doubles on the Calicos and my friend got a solid Yellowtail on the 300, with the fish eating right at the boat.

For all you Calico nuts, the fishing was as good as advertised. We didn't really target them too much. But, the on drift we really did, we caught 50-60 fish in 30 mins or so. (3 guys casting). The panga captain said it's not uncommon to have 300-400 fish days.

An Amazing trip and I can't wait to do it again next year.

Nice trip man. Did you go down there on a long range boat or was it pure panga fishing? Bucket list item for sure.

We fished out the Cedros Outdoor Adventure lodge. 4.5 days of panga fishing.

The MX gov. closed  fishing to all vessels over 30ft, maybe 6-7 yrs ago. So, now only the local pangas have access to the entire fishery. I fished there 10+ yrs ago on the Royal Polaris and have wanted to go back ever since.

During the pandemic the island was completely closed off last year. So fishing was even better this year...

We mainly targeted the YT. But, couldn't keep the bonita and calicos off the surface iron for most of the days. I'd say at least 30+ bonita and 50+ calicos each day as bycatch.

My wife and i are booked for oct. 30th to nov. 2nd 2021 and we can't wait. first time to CEDROS for us. Can you elaborate on what worked for the sea bass? and was there any bigger WSB. Did you guys kill any halis or sheephead?

Great trip bra.

Thanks.

Great trip bra.

Thanks.

We got lucky and got on teh WSB the last afternoon. We left the YT biting and went to a high spot in 70ft of water. The capt said maybe big YT, BSB or WSB. We had a tank full of macks and dines, we hadn't touch all day, so we dropped a couple down on dropper loops. The first drop we tripled up on WSB, two on bait and one on colt sniper jig. We ended up going 5-10 on 10-20lb grade WSB.

Others in our group got some smaller BSB up to 40lb on live bait. SHeephead up to 15lbs on chunk macks and bonita.

We made a few drift each morning for butts with swimmers and stickbaits. We never got touched. But, it was a full moon and I didn't like the big tides.

I took 4X too much tackle. I took pounds of bigger hammers and MCs. I took a dozen surface irons and 6-8 yo-yo.

What you really need: JRI-4, Tady45 and DW-1 in blue/white and mint. Colt Sniper jigs 80-130g, shiny colors. SP minnow lazer minnow color, the small size. Big hammer Calico Hunter swimmers on 2oz heads. They hit the hard baits OK... I wish I had brought a 250....
