Tips and Techniques on Crankdown Hardbaits

Great video with lots of good information.  Pay attention to his comments on the importance of a varied retrieve.  The thing I often see people have a problem with is they retrieve at one steady cranking speed.  You will catch some fish that way but you are missing a lot of the bait's potential.  I crankdown a lot and I have learned to reel with a subtle but always-changing cadence.  Pauses where the bait starts floating up often trigger a bite.  But another effective retrieve is to slightly speed up and slow down as you reel.  Like I said this is pretty subtle.  With a bait like the Wade Boggs you can feel it thump.  But as you speed up the retrieve you will get an occasional hard thump.  Something like thump-thump-THUMP.  When I get that hard thump I will ease up the retrieve- not a full stop but just a slowing of  the retrieve and thats often the point where I get bit.  Alternate with full stops and a couple of burning reel cranks occasionally and pay attention to what you were doing when the bite comes.  You need to really feel what the bait is doing as you retrieve.  And again its a pretty subtle constant cadence-change, not something herky-jerky.  Its subtle but I've seen it make a huge difference in the number of bites when I've fished alongside someone who just chucks and winds steadily.
