NCCNC
I have been lurking here for a few months, but took the plunge and registered tonight. The info that I have gathered here has really changed my outlook on bass fishing....in a GREAT way! I live in North Carolina and have just recently started throwing big swimbaits. I have pretty much broken every one of my records at each of my favorite spots. I fish private ponds, and public lakes for Largemouth, and the French Broad River in my backyard for Smallies and Muskie. I have nailed two 10+ pounders in the last three weeks, and inadvertently slammed four good Muskie (I suppose its the nature of throwing such large baitfish lures). My family has a cottage in Michigan, on a lake that is terribly under fished, especially for a lake that is over a mile long, and 3/4 of a mile wide. I have been hooked on that lake since I caught my first 12" monster lurking under the lily pads, at the age of 5. As soon as I realized how productive these bigger baits are, all I have been thinking is I NEED to get up there to that lake. We typically go in August, and I always do very well. On an average day, its not uncommon to pull out 5-7 fish over 5 pounds.....along with big ole' Northern Pike. I couldn't stand it though. I spoke with a fish biologist in that area for about an hour the other day, and got so worked up, I have decided to spend a week at the lake in early April. Everyone thinks I am crazy, driving 15 hours to target the same fish that live in the pond down the road. I just have supreme confidence in that water, and have seen bass there that make me weak in the knees, but could never get them to take my lures. I have gotten three largemouth over 10 pounds, and two 9 pound smallies, in the 25 years I have been fishing there, and they were all on large live bluegill while targeting Pike. With all the great info I have read here, and the success I have had using techniques that you guys have posted, I think I know what I have been missing in my Michigan honey hole.....HUDD TROUT! When I was younger, there were other fishermen on the lake, but the last eight or nine years, I have hardly seen anyone else casting a line. The rest of my family that spends much more time there than I do, says the same thing. I am super excited at my prospects. The picture is on one of the better ones from last fall. I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section of the forum, but I looked around for quite some time, and it seems this is where it fits the best. I just wanted to throw out a huge THANK YOU to all you fella's that have put all this valuable advice out there for a newbie like me to use to my advantage. I really appreciate it! stkbass
Welcome to SU. I'd be pumped too if I were you. Good luck on your trip. Tight lines!
NCCNC
I am sure all of you can identify....getting pumped about seeing those monsters cruise by in deep clear water. I will definitely update with pictures after the trip. Kind of bittersweet though. My cousin, who is my bassin' partner in crime couldn't swing vacation, so it will just be a solo trip. Me and the Kayak.
thebeardedbassman
Welcome, my only suggestion would be to stay far, far away from the Blackmarket..... It's bad over there . basskickinrednick, StriperAddict, ricardo and 3 others

NCCNC
Thats no joke! I've already thrown close to 2100.00 bucks at rods, reels, lures, and terminal tackle. I thought a lot more stuff from my standard fishing gear would just translate right over. NOPE.
kdatwe
Live bluegill are a killer bait - those fish you've caught have to be flirting with the state record in Michigan! SU is the greatest, between it and ebay I am perpetually poor, but lure rich. On a different note, I agree the Hudd trout is the bait of baits for soft swimmers; but if you've caught yours on live bluegill wouldn't a bluegill bait be more logical to gravitate to? Not prying just wondering why you chose that direction. Good luck in your endeavor.
NCCNC
I called DNR to come out for both of the smallies. The second one was .37 off the state record. He promised not to tell anyone where is was caught. Lol. I agree, staying with what will be working. There will also be live bluegill and perch on free lines. Sorry for the terrible photo, but the attached picture is of the thing. Large serving spoon for scale. This is while I was washing it down, and packing it for transport to the taxidermist. That was the only large bass I have ever kept. It swallowed my entire pike rig, 2 treble hooks the leader, and an entire 7" bluegill. It would have never lived, so we had it mounted and it's above the mantle up at our cottage. BigSlant

NCCNC
And.....I just spent my first 115 bucks in the Blackmarket. As if Motorcycles, guns, Jeep's, and knives weren't enough hobbies to throw money at. I can only imagine what some of your tackle rooms look like.
