    8 lb Siskiyou Bass

A few months ago I was fishing a lake in my area for the day while my mom was at work. The lake is said to have “smallmouth only” so I targeted a creek inlet full of stocker trout. I was using a gancraft 178 in a trout pattern sight fishing for some big smallies when I saw 3 absolute giant largies cruise in. I sprinted towards them watching one eat a trout as I was part way there. I fired my gancraft past them and twitched it erratically as the smallest one comes up and eats it. After it was hooked a random but very helpful old man netted it for me. Put her on the scale and took some pics. She went 8 and the myth of smallmouth only was now gone. (Sorry for the long writeup)

Imo the most versatile shad glide is a workhorse, but if not than go for a phoney frog.Insane glide on them and you can find them for around $150

Don't hold your breath on that one. He has several Instagram posts with different baits that have never been in production. He has posted the 6", 8", and 12" Born Again multiple times and still no release. His plastic gizzard bait.....etc. In fact he has tons baits we have never seen that he has made and will probably never move to production. He is a mad man, genius, and he takes his sweet time designing, testing, and fishing. Don't take me wrong here, I would LOVE to start seeing more of those baits pushed out into production, but this has been Mickeys way for as long as he has been making baits.

  13. Bored and ambitious so I thought I would post weights of a bunch of different baits. I am weighing these on my own scale so these weights are exact. I'll specify what hooks are on the bait that I am weighing, whether it be stock or replacement hooks. I am not going to get picky about split rings. Obviously a lot of different baits I do not own, but maybe people can add to this and we can keep the thread near the top. Here goes... Hard Baits - S-waver 200 - 3.40oz with Owner 1/0 ST-36 Savage Gear Glide Swimmer 205 - 2.9oz with Owner #1 ST-41 Hiroshima 8.5" hard tail trout - 4.5oz with Gammie 1/0 Deps 250 SS(New Model) - 6.15oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 Woodenswimbaits 3 piece Mag Rat(Prototype) - 5.1oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 and feather tail hook Woodenswimbaits Wake 125 Rat - Varies from 2.0oz - 2.5oz with #1 Owner #1 ST-41 Woodenswimbaits 175 Mag Rat - 3.75oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 and worm tail Woodenswimbaits 175 Regular(Prototype) - 3.05oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 Woodenswimbaits 125 Crank Rat - 2.3oz with no hooks or rings MS Slammer 14" Super Slammer 2014 - 6.65oz with Owner 3/0 ST-36 MS Slammer 12" 2005 - 4.15oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 MS Slammer 12" 2012 - 5.05oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 MS Slammer 9" 2005 - 2.8oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 MS Slammer 9" 2015 - 3.15oz with Owner 1/0 ST-41 3:16 Hyper Herring Wake - 2.2oz with Owner 1/0 front and #1 back ST-41 3:16 Hyper Herring Crank - 2.35oz with Owner 1/0 front and #1 back ST-41 3:16 Hyper Herring Sinker - 2.75oz with Owner #1 ST-41 Triple trout 10" - 4.5oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 Spro BBZ 8" floater - 4.6oz with 1/0 unknown hooks Spro BBZ 8" SS - 4.8oz with stock hooks Spro BBZ 8" FS - 5.3oz with stock hooks Deps Bullshooter 190 with nose weight removed - 5.95oz with stock feather hooks Deps Bullshooter 160 with nose weight removed - 3.65oz with Owner #1 ST-41 Morgan Custom Lures Glide Gill 7" - 4.7oz with Owner 1/0 front and #1 back ST-41 Got 'em Coach Real Gill 7" SS - 3.55oz with unknown 1/0 front and #1 back Black Dog Baits Wooden Shellcracker SS - 3.5oz with Owner #1 ST-41 Black Dog Baits Shellcracker G2 - 1.35oz with stock hooks Soft Baits - Mattlures U2 Gill - .95oz Realprey Alewive top hook SS - 2.2oz Realprey Alewive top hook medium sink - 2.3oz Realprey G2 Pond Shiner SS - 2.35oz with #4 short shank vmc Huddleston 6" weedless rof 5 - 1.6oz Huddleston 8" rof 5 - 4.1oz(same as weedless) Huddleston 8" rof 12 - 4.5oz(same as weedless) Rago Soft Tool 9" - 5.0oz with Owner 2/0 ST-41 Use this for reference. Lots of people wanting to know when when buying rods and line. Be aware, 6oz seems to be the magic number for jumping up to a big rod. The Okuma XH and Dobyns 807 are great for baits up to about 5.5 - 6oz. Once you get over 6oz it will start feeling like a bit much for those rods. Feel free to post up baits I don't have. Plenty more high end, Matt's, and 3:16 baits that are widely used.

    316 bluegill glide

I have one....its a great bait. I have caught more fish on the freestyle gills than the glide. But I’ve put more time into the freestyles though. I’ve caught a lot of fish on the Bullshooter too, so that’s a good alternative until the bait drops.

  32. Never thrown the 7”, but i didn’t experience any helicopter cast, but I also wasn’t trying to bomb em out as I only had a small area of open water. Also the rod I use is moderate action, designed for striper fishing but I made one into a swimbait rod and it’s been awesome. The slower action definitely helps with the heavier/awkward shaped baits.

  33. There was another post about this somewhere, pretty unanimous, bait is rock solid and a flat out fish catcher. Smack mine into cliff walls and boulders plenty and still haven't experienced a leak in any of them.

    Swimbait Collections

Nothing special here but pretty damn excited to throw these 5” WRS’s. I caught tons of quality fish last season on the 6.75” not sure why I took so long to buy these. I think they will be clutch when the bite is slow. I’ve listed the colors below in order from top to bottom: D-Ice, Blue Trout, Bluegill, Chartreuse, Goldie, Black Crappie, JC Custom and Bone

  42. Knocked out a few more multi joint gill prototypes and decided I wanted to give one a different look by painting it my first ever attempt at a black crappie pattern. I chose a spray paint base for the paint because I wanted to try a rougher, "splatter paint" look (especially for the black back)...using six different colors to try blending the patterns as well as I could. It turned out better than I expected, although the black paint did cover up a lot of my green fade detail towards the lateral line. I free handed the black patterns on the sides one by one with a toothpick which took me a few hours in itself to complete. Overall very happy with how this bait turned out. This one will be contributed to the SU Grassroots Bait Swap, and although it hurts to let her go I'm excited to see what kind of damage another SU member can do with her. I have two more blanks with swivelling hook hangers primed and ready for paint, so I think I want to try this pattern again with green sides instead of white and silver. The bait comes in at 7 inches in length and weighs 2-7/8 oz. The full set of soft plastic fins pulses nicely with the bait as it swims and should collapse easily when a big bass decides to crush the bait.

  43. Being a younger angler I am usually on foot or my bike when I’m going out fishing so I am constantly fishing the smaller heavily pressured ponds by my house. Ive been fishing for around 11 years but 2 years ago I picked up swimbaits and it has really changed the way I break down waters. So when fishing the pressured bodies of water you definitely have to think outside the box. Here is my approach fishing these ponds from the bank. My Equipment: I want to be as mobile as possible so I only bring one rod and reel with me as it is easy to walk around. The setup I use that can throw every bait I bring with me to a new body of water is a Dobyns 806 paired with a Shimano Tranx 300 spooled with 25 lb pline fluorocarbon. Polarized sunglasses are a must have in my opinion it allows you to see fish, your bait, and anything in the water a fish could be located on. For a backpack I use the Lateral Vision Repel, it is waterproof which is a huge bonus that keeps all your gear nice and dry. Here are some other things I bring with me that are self explanatory; split ring pliers, mend it, Bass Dynasty, a knife, Working Class Zero travel ready measuring board, and a digital scale. Baits: As for baits I try to keep it simple just bring a couple of baits that cover the entire water column and fish them hard. - Spro Rat 50 - 7 inch Triple Trout - DRT Tiny Klash - 5 inch Rising Son - S-waver 168 - G2 Shellcracker I have found that the most simple changes have done so much, such as: tuning a tiny klash to slow sink, filing down the joint on a swaver, adding size 2 hooks instead of size 1’s. What to throw and when: Summer: During the summer months my go to baits are wakebaits, smaller gill baits, and small bass colored glides. Almost all the fish I catch are early in the morning or sunset that being because it was the prime feeding time. The fish I catch are usually located on structure. Whether it be some sort of pipe, under a tree, or back in a ditch that comes off a pond. Fall: Nothing beats burning a triple trout or aggressively fishing a tiny klash. Fishing during the fall is such a fun thing the fish are out bulking up for the winter so they are very aggressive. I remember my first time fishing a triple trout one afternoon after school and I caught about 10 bass in 45 minutes just burning it along some dying grass lines. Winter: Winter fishing is definitely where I am the weakest, but my two most successful baits are a swaver and a 5 inch rising son. The one thing I have learned is fish deeper and slower. Spring: Bluegill and baby bass glides have been my best producers. The fish in early spring will generally be cruising up and down the banks then later stuck on beds in full attack mode. Where I catch most of my fish: When I go to a new pond I target any changes in composition on the shoreline. What I mean by this is say there is a pond and all the edges are rocky well then I would be looking for points, bushes, trees, pipes, coves, etc. Just anything that is a little different and sticks out to me. Sometimes there will be ponds that are have no change like a giant round swimming pool, in that case I use a bait that can cover water fast and I walk around casting almost parallel to the shore as I know they use the shoreline as an ambush point. The spots I circled are where I have had the most success at. Feel free to contact me @cj_bassinish on here or instagram if you have any questions! Thank you for the submission to the Underground Collective @Cj_bassinish. View full record

  48. If your belief is that swimbaits are only categorized or defined by size, then welcome to the box.....And that being a very tiny box indeed. If this is the case, then I'd have to give up some of my smaller 3:16 weapons, like my Little Booger's, MissionFish, 3:16 Minnows, Curltails, Bluegills, Sunfish, and Shads........Yikes! Nothing like eliminating some of the most productive 3:16 soft swimbaits in my arsenal just because some feel the need to diminish or eliminate the swimbait moniker due to size restrictions. My reply is not pointed at anyone with a different opinion, but is only a response and my perspective to the question presented by the Swimbait Underground Crew. Maybe the real challenge is in the word "swimbait or swimbaiting". I mean we're all just using LURES, some of those lures just happen to be big, really big, or really-really big lures. Can it be defined by separating soft baits and hard baits on polar opposite sides of the spectrum or into different categories all together? Is swimbaiting a reference to motion, technique, bait size, manufacturing material, or maybe a state of mind? God forbid it would just be the inclusion into an elitist group of monster bait chuckers! I could expound further, but I digress. BBI
