    Maybe try a gradual sweeping hookset instead. My guess is you might just be overpowering and yanking the bait right out of the fish's mouth. The weedless shad is a small bait. You said you're using a hudd rod with a weedless shad? I'm thinking of it like like the old 'yank the table cloth out from under the dishes' scenario. The bait is small and you're setting the hook so hard and fast you don't give the small hook a chance to grab anything inside the mouth.
