Now that's what I'm talking about. I picked up some poplar from home depot it seems dense and somewhat heavy. But I figured it'll work for a really big bait that I want to work just under the surface. thanks guys any and all input is very well appreciated.

Just start carving something u like and can control the rate of fall by adding weight. Trying adding a little weight to the belly side of the bait until its floating just below the surface where u want it. More weight equals deeper depths less weight makes the bait more buoyant. Trial and error but just go at it. once u start its almost impossible to stop. Once u start learning how it works you are gonna make all types of stuff, first rule is have fun with it. Some of the best catching baits don't look like anything the big companies sell.

Whats up fellas one more question, I've checked many pages on this forum and can't find it, I'm pretty sure its been spoken of here in the forum. How would i control the glide on a glide bait. i understand controlling rate of fall but how do you make the bait turn from side to side in a S formation. Is there more lead in the head so it stays in motion. Is the action performed in the rod work. Any info would be great. i have a few baits carved up and I'm about to start molding and casting but i want to make sure i have the basics down a little before i start throwing money down the toilet on baits that don't work. I correct myself i don't want to throw ALOT of money down the toilet or lets say in the lake..Trial and error but less trail and less error means a lot more saved money..

Im with you, to me wood is wood also. I carve baits with almost any wood i find. But theres got to be a wood that will sink faster and need less lead than lets say carving out of balsa which requires a lot of lead. some wood might not be worth wasting the money on. Im one who doesn't really mind spending a couple extra bucks on better material but i also don't want to spend that extra money if its pointless.

walk into any starbucks, dunkin donuts, 7-11 and grab a handful, free 99. can't get cheaper than that.

Whats the deal fellas, just wondering if any of u guys can give me a run down on different types of wood. Whats the difference between pine and cedar and what effect do these woods have on bait making. thanks a lot fellas they were all good advice. I'm guessing its thru trial and error that one would figure out how to keep it suspended nice and straight but at the same time dive deeper when cranking it in without a plastic lip huh?

il shape and design with modeling clay, bake it so its hard and then copy it using molding materials. Clay allows me to get thinner towards the end of the fin for more hydrodynamics and a lot more detailed.

Do you brush it on or do you soak it?

You can probably counteract that roll by placing a little weight opposite of where it's rolling u probably wouldn't need much. If the head is pulling it add some weight to the tail it will slow it down. If it tilts to the rolls to the left maybe moving the hooks over will keep it straight. Trials and errors. Good luck.

About 8 inches. Do u know if u can soak a wooden bait in linseed oil? Will that help the bait sink faster?
