nightsessions
Saw this on another site and thought it would be a good topic to have more info on When are you guys cranking your wake baits (wake jr, slammer, etc) down vs just waking them on the top? wayniac316
I've had such great success catching fish with cranking them down I don't even wake them anymore give it a try you won't be disappointed
fishaholic211
Cranking down your wake is an awesome but overlooked technique
SethB
I really like the slammers for cranking but have got a few cranking the wake jr.
Ceaser
The crankdown is good enough to when I see these topics I cringe. I throw crankdown wakes all year and its my #1 technique. Id say I throw them 75% of the time, regardless of species. CNt really recommend a bait since I make my own custom for what I want but early next year ill have some xrankdown options readily available. Not just wakes that will crankdown but baits made specifically for it.

Danny C.
Ceaser hooked me up with a slap/wake/crank down bait and it gets hit. Ive stuck a few on it but have missed a lot! User error though) haha I get to excited and swing way to hard
jrodgers762
If the topwater bite is slow I will crank down the wake baits. Thr Wake Jr is an awesome bait for doing that. The Shellcracker is another good one. Just crank it and you'll get bit.
JessRey
I don't so much crank down but when throwing wakes, I'll crank down a bit and let it float back up then dead stick it for a few secs. The old drying and trying fish bit.
derds126
I started making my own wakes that would crank down easier and they work great. If you're not doing this yet, you need to start lol. Fluoro helps this.

echoedd
Have had good success cranking down when fish arnt fully committing to a wake bait up top. Also when the wind dies down and the water becomes glass. Crank down and get them in the subsurface zone. Did well last year cranking the silent killer 250 thru tree tops, the larger bill on it helped it get thru. Also cranking down the 175 model. Trick was using a 6.1 gear ratio to get the bait to thump, once that speed was maintained the bites came. Looking forward to trying some wood crank down baits. Top Ramen
Have had good success cranking down when fish arnt fully committing to a wake bait up top. This is basically what I do. If the fish aren't reacting to the bait on top, I start cranking it down every few casts. If it gets bit that way, I start cranking it down more often. Volfan
I like to fish the slammers like an OG rapala. Reel down and let float back up. Vary the cadence until you get bit. Works great over grass or over boulder fields.
