Shipping rods with FedEx

Hey all, does anyone here ship rods via FedEx? If so, have you noticed a significant price increase recently? I've always used them via my fedex account and shipping rods generally cost $20-30, but two recent rods hit my account for $65 and $70. Since I print a label at work and just drop the shipping tube off at my local office, I don't know what the bill will be until the invoice hits, but it's never been an issue until now. Unfortunately FedEx customer service was no help at all, so it looks like I need to find a new shipping service.

i've always done Fedex and it has never been more than 50, even in a PVC tube. Last time i shipped a rod was a month or two ago. I've noticed that the price you pay often has something to do with the person you're dealing with.

i think last time i went, they tried to quote me $80, and when i told them i usually pay less than 50, they were like "oh yeah right there it is..." and dropped the price.

Not ideal, but i like them better than UPS

The weirdest part is that if I put the info in the FedEx shipping calculator, the estimate it gives is still inline with previous pricing, and customer service can't explain why.

are you dealing with them over the phone or in person? might effect the level of urgency/ willingness to help for the people if you're there

Over the phone via the 1-800-GOFEDEX line.  Since I have an account and print my own labels, the only interaction I have with the store employees is a quick hello as I leave my packages on their counter.

I have shipped rods back and forth from Vegas to Minnesota and I just use usps. If you buy and print the label from home you can just say its only 99'' long and label and drop it off or schedule a pick up and they arent going to measure it.

Priority shipping for a 99'' tube is around 25 bucks.

I was just quoted $150 at UPS for an 8' cardboard TW tube. "Not Allowed" that.

WTF $150!?!?!?!

I use USPS and purchase the appropriate level of insurance and it's about $25-$35 depending on how far it has to ship. I should note I only reuse shippers from TW and ALF so I think they are 8'.
