Haven't been slinging big baits very long but I had never watched a fish follow a lure for a long way and then just look at you and swim away. Currently the water in ladybird lake (TX) is very clear and I could see a long way down and away from the boat. For that reason I was trying to throw the bait for max distance. I rotated through the 3 baits I brought on vacation and of the 3 two of them the swaiver and Matt lures strong shad produced the most tails. I tried to downsize to the baby hard gill but that seemed to generate no attention. I am guessing that they would smash the gill when guarding fry. I got a lot of landed fish on the followup worm but none of the larger fish I was seeing. Maybe next trip I will bring soft swimbaits to see if they do any better.
