FishyPaco
Has anyone tried slinging hinkles or mothers on a Phenix 909XHJ? This is my yellowtail jig (iron) rod. It’s rated 30-80# with a fast action. If you have an experience I’d love to know, thanks!
El_Weruso
The owner from Performance tackle near me told me that rod is perfect for hinkles and mothers. BUT he said that when he wraps them for swim bait rods he clips off the first 4 inches from the blank to beef it up more which i believe makes it 8'6". That blank is the EXACT blank i'm going to use the day i save up money to make a custom swimbait rod. ISO_the1
A lot of guys use that blank for a mother rod. But Not the production model. I did not know that when I got my production model 909XHJ. El_Weruso
thedonnguyen
also note whether its deckhand or has a reel seat...most of the time, the reel seats on saltwater rods aren't placed appropriately for throwing large baits
FishyPaco
Good to know! Thanks I have a production model deckhand grip. Maybe i'll get a reel clamp for my tranx 400 and give it a shot!
Bass_blaster
I’ve made an 809XHJ into a heavy swimbait rod and love it. I don’t have any hinkles but it tosses a mother fine. I wanted something a little bigger so I also made a Hybrid 869XH and it’s a different ballgame. Throws the mother easy. Both of them also see use in saltwater so they’re quite versatile for what I do. Next up is a 909XHJ but not sure if/how I’ll trim it before building it. That’ll have to wait to see how the blank feels when I get it. Ultimately, if the 909XHJ is anything like the 809 then it’ll be just fine .
