    6” FS trout

Trout eater on the new freestyle trout. Made two short casts just checking out the action on the bait, third was a bomb cast. Slow steady retrieve all the way in, then about 10ft away I gave it some pops and twitches and this healthy girl hammered it. Had to swing it up 5’ onto the bank. That was a fun one watching her hit the bait. gear: f5 866 curado k 17lb cxx 6” freestyle trout SS in “trout”

  5. Collin (cd7) and I had a pretty great weekend. We qualified for and fished the American Bass Team Classic Northern region at lake Berryessa on Friday and Saturday. We had never been to the lake before but had a few days before the tourney for practice. We got a few bites on swimbaits in practice but we took the hooks off the baits and shook them off (really hard to do). Still, the bites weren’t real consistent but we went into day 1 pretty confident that we could get a couple good fish on swimbaits. Day 1- we started off the day with a quick limit on jigs and a-rigs but the fish were small and so around noon we started throwing the swimbaits. It took a little bit and a change in the types of areas we were targeting but Collin was able to get a 6.5 and 7.8 between 1:00 and 1:30. Then around 2:00 I caught a 4+ on a swimbait but it was not hooked inside the mouth and in CA the law is that you have to have the hook inside the mouth or it is not a legal catch. So, although it made us feel sick, we decided to let it go. Fast forward another 45 min. or so and I hook another one on the swimbait. This one was BIG. Hardest pulling fish I’ve ever hooked. It got about 15 ft or so from the boat and came off. Bummer. We ended up coming back in to weigh in with 19.42 and sitting in third place but we were down 12 lbs to the leaders! They had 31 and some change with a 9+ big fish! We went back to the house that night and decided we would just swing for the fences on day 2 and only throw swimbaits. Win or bust. Day 2- We’ve only got 1 rod a piece out on the deck and we’re committed to slinging them all day. Well, we did. And it worked out. we weren’t able to find any bites on the stuff we caught them on the day before so we decided to change things up and try a different pattern. First stop after that change I get bit and hook up. 4 lber. We move to another spot. I hook up again and it’s another big one. It gets about 4 inches from the net and decides to dig on me and pulls off. We estimated between 9-10 lbs. Big One! I nearly puked. But credit to Collin for getting my head back in the game. He reminded me that it was still really early and we were getting the bites. “Get it back out there!” Next stop, Collin hooks up, another 4 lber. We moved again to the spot that I caught my first one and Collin hooks up again, 6.5 lber! Now we’re feeling a little better. We go back to the spot where I lost the big one earlier. I hook up, 5.5 lber. Now we just need that 5th bite. It took a little while but we ended up going back to the spot that Collin and I had both caught fish earlier. Collin lines me up for a cast and I bomb it out there. Hook up, 7.7 lber! We’re stoked! I ended up catching one more but it wouldn’t cull. We start heading back to weigh in thinking that we probably needed that giant one that I lost to win but we were still pretty happy with the day. Plenty of bites. We get back to weigh in to see that most of the weights were down. We weighed in 27.63 for the day and waited to see what would happen. Well, the day one leaders had an unfortunate day and only came in with 8 lbs. We ended up winning by nearly 6 lbs with 47.05 The prize for the win was a Ranger RT188 bass boat with a Mercury 115 outboard! Plus some cash, a Lowrance HDS Live 7, a couple Daiwa rods and reels and some sweet hardware! What a Great Lake and a great tourney. We’ve been working really hard for the past month and a half looking at maps, satellite images, reading fishing reports, tourney reports and getting all of the gear ready for this tourney. Some planning, team work, dedication, positivity and just some plain old good luck came together to for us. Day one fish Day two fish

  10. A few days ago I joined Swimbait Underground and yesterday I caught my biggest bass ever... coincidence... I think not! About a year ago I began throwing swimbaits and struggled. In Oregon our bass are not notorious for their swimbait eating ability; however, they still eat them good! Due to this, at first I didn't have too much confidence and I wondered if it could be done. After a few months of throwing a glidebait, I finally connected with my first fish: a 3 lb smallmouth that ate off a concrete wall in downtown Portland. Since then, the addiction has steadily increased. I acquired baits such as the Megabass I-Slide 185 and 262, the Deps Slide Swimmer 175 and 250, the Gancraft Jointed Claw 178 and 230, Working Class Zero 6 and 7 Citizen, and I was lucky enough to find a 3:16 Wake Jr from a coworker (I work at a tackle shop) for a fraction of what they resell for. Since I started swimbait fishing (not exclusively) I have found success throughout a variety of Oregon and Washington waters. Before the events that took place over the past few days, my biggest swimbait fish were around a 3.5-4 lb smallmouth and a 3 lb largemouth. However, after recently finding a Roman Made Negotiator in Oikawa Mesu, I put in a full two days at a local lake that has a fairly healthy population of trout. On the second day at 8:30 in the morning, I made a long cast over deep open water where I had seen trout eating off the surface. I began a slow and steady retrieve feeling the bait make wide turns back and forth and about 10 feet in front of the boat, right as I could start to see the bait, I saw the biggest bass I have ever seen make a beeline towards my bait. My eyes became incredibly wide and it took all I could muster to continue the slow and steady retrieve without yelling in excitement and anticipation. Before I knew what had happened, the bass sucked the Negotiator in head first. There was no hesitation, no doubt in its mind, that bass intended to obliterate that bait. After what seemed like an endless battle of violent head shakes and a terrifying run under my boat, the fish was finally in the net. After giving it plenty of oxygen in the livewell, the fish weighed in at 6.96 lbs of pure northern strain goodness! I look forward to learning and contributing more to Swimbait Underground! 12. Exactly a year apart from my previous PB, I managed to break my PB by 4 pounds on the proto 12.5 Fish Everything taxi trout. This was a serious bender and it paid off big time. Late nights, early mornings, skunk after skunk on this lake, and I was finally rewarded. The fish went 30.1# and 42.5”. If only her stomach was a little more full, this would be a different type of post. I’m glad I released this fish and watched her swim to the depths.

  40. Be careful with snaps I usually marry the snap to the bait. Opening it seems to weaken em a bit but maybe these more modern snaps don't have this issue.....have never tried Palomar ever, it always seemed too complicated for me. That's alot of work to do at night too if you fish then.....my issue is the discernible mark left when I cinch down fluoro using uni or improved clinch even after wetting it with spit. It doesn't affect strength but can't be good.

  42. Hey guys, Just wanted to take a min and pass on my thoughts on a recent rod purchase I made. I bought an Abu Toro casting rod off TW and have fished it a couple outings now. First, this rod is a beast but very light. It was designed as a Musky rod and mine comes in at 8' rated for lures 4-10 oz. I paired it with a Tranx 300 and it feels great in the hand. The rod has a long split handle with a large casting butt end made of Eva foam which made casting a big bait a breeze. Ive been using it to throw an 8" Hudd and it's performed great. Only fish on it so far was a 3lber and it handled it no problem. I have no doubt it will handle bigger fish with ease. I would caution that the action is definitely fast and it is by no means parabolic so I would keep that in mind if you were wanting it for treble hook baits. I plan on sticking to single hook offerings. Just wanting to pass on my experience to anyone looking for a factory rod capable of tossing the big baits.
