  1. What bassbass said. With weedless baits I try to point at the bait as I’m reeling in. When you get bit. Reel down until you feel her and then set the hook. I’ve been doing it this way with my weedless hudds, rising sons, and mission fish with not any more missed than the normal misses. Mono 100 percent of the time. Pline original pf and cxx 20 lbs

  2. Awesome you got a topwater bite already. You are definitely going to want some heavier line and eventually a dedicated big bait rod setup.  Not sure how heavy the rat is that you are using, but I’d hate see you tear up a rod and reel, or cast the bait off due to thin line.  I like 20 and 25 lbs test mono for my rat fishing

  3. You can also look into twisting your own screw eyes.  You can get almost any sized SS wire from welding shops and online.  I ran some tests on screw eyes I made vs .092’s all epoxied in pine, and I’m definitely  switching to handmade screw eyes.  It does take a lot of pull them out, but I pulled the .092’s out.  Couldn’t pull the handmade eyes out without breaking the wood, with a lot more pressure.

  4. Defiantly following this one.  I’ve been wondering the same thing, and thinking about painting one of my rats with some kind of glow paint.  I have a little cylindrical keychain made with tritium that I was thinking about dangling from the front of a rat.  Might be cool for tracking the bait on a cast in pitch black conditions.
