  1. Just seal the blooody one, don't even paint it, fish will love the blood!
  2. 217 views and 6 replies, come on guys! Help for everyone! It's a forum!
  3. Thanks! I searched the forum, the stuff I found was more about which Baits work best, less about actual techniques.
  4. I've been doing a lot of research on glidebaits. They're one bait that neither my friend, nor I catch on very often, but they seem to be big fish catchers for a lot of other people. I realize that we don't use them a lot based on where we fish the most (weeds), but we've been fishing a lot more clear water. We typically have luck on rats, slammers and the like, but never anything big on glide Baits. I've been fishing S wavers and savage shineglides. I get a ton of follows, and a few small bites, but nothing like I see caught here. Wondering what you guys do to turn those big followers into biters. One thing I've found is to have a soft plastic on standby, ready to go and when I get a missed hit or an aggressive follow I drop the plastic (6" hudd or weedless paddle tail) near where I saw the follower and about 50% of the time I can get another hit, but again, I'd like to see the hits come more on the glide Baits. Thanks guys.
  5. I have a 14' old town. 2 guys can stand no problem. It's 42 inches at the beam, which makes it really stable and it only drafts Maybe 2 inches. The only issue i have is weight, its really heavy for what it is. My fiancé and I can move it no problem, but for those solo trips I'd consider getting a set of wheels from LLbean or making a set yourself.
  6. I get it, I consistently get hit on slammers by little fish too. My question was phrased wrong. What "big fish" Baits do you use that consistantly get nailed by little guys, and why do you think they're so aggressive.
  7. I love the look of this bait both in the hand and in the water. So do the fish... but the wrong size keeps hitting it. Last fall and so far this spring I've had sub 1lb fish absolutely annihilate this thing, one yesterday came clean out of the water on the strike. What Baits do you guys use that seem to catch quantity but not quality?
  8. We do full contact ice fishing... when a flag goes up it's every man for himself getting to the hole.
  9. My PB rainbow trout came slinging flies on chrismast eve 2014... 3 weeks later we were ice fishing in the same spot. Last year all the local ponds froze over but never got cold enough for safe ice. Sucked.
  10. Went out a few days ago and managed one bass on a cranked down 7" 2x slammer... went out the next morning and my slammer bounced.
  11. Walmart has a special on uglysticks!
  12. Imagine a big feisty pickerel just snipping that thing off? Ouch.
  13. BPS pro qualifier, on a BPS JM titanium8, and an okuma Citrix on a Guide select... swim baiting on a budget!
  14. I got my confidence in hudds by throwing a 68 special weedless perch this year. Ive had the most luck on the 68 weedless, but that's because I fish it the most. I just got an 8inch trout that I'm excited to throw, but the snow is flying today in NE so I do t think I'll get to use it for a while- it'll be really good in the spring.
  15. Small ponds are actually the only places I've had luck on rats...
  16. 7'6" 1-4oz. I've been running this with my Abu 6500. Really nice rod, sensitive for soft bites and feeling the bottom. 1-4oz isn't an accurate rating for it though, I'd say 3-8. $125 OBO, cash in MA/NH/RI preferred but can negotiate shipping.
  17. a lot of bass tournaments require rods less than 7'11", :most: of the musky rods I've come across Are 8'0", which makes them illegal for the tournies I've fished.... I only know this because I tried to use a fly rod in a bass tourney this summer, which would have worked except my fly rods are 9'. They actually make special fly rods for bass tourneys now that are 7'11". 2 cents.
  18. With lures that aren't all that different, I usually just pick one, and use it. If it doesn't give me confidence after a few honest outings I'll make the switch. Perfect examples (most of these are surf fishing because that's what I do the most of) Diawa SP minnow vs Savage Sluggo vs hogy Sebile vs storm wild eye To the untrained eye you couldn't tell the difference between these lures, and the prices are the same. I'd pick whichever one is more readily available and go from there.
  19. The graphite series rods are an ok blank, but the extras on it are garbage. I used to work at bps in Foxboro and we had just about half the graphite series we sold get returned for crap components. That being said I've owned 3, broke one by overloading it, had one that had all the guide inserts falling out (4-10oz), and one that was absolutely perfect. I got them with my discount,so even if I had to replace the guides it was still almost worth it. But I would never pay full price for one, and never recommended them to someone who was planning on more than "taking the kids fishing" If I were you, I'd return it and spend the extra cash to get one of the new johnny Morris swimbait rods. 7-11 1-4 oz I think. They feel way higher quality and would definitely fit with your ambassadeur.
  20. A little bit of insight from a guy that surf fishes. Both my spinning setups for the surf have 50lb braid tied to 6' of 40lb mono leader, To a 150lb TA clip... The way the op is describing "backing" is actually the mainline with a leader. 3-10' of a stretchier/clear line is pretty standard when using braid outside of bass fishing. For my surf stuff, most of what j throw is between 2-5oz, I put them out between 70-110yds and it's very easy to snap things off when it's not done correctly. On my swimbait setups I use straight 20lb mono- I use a standard size 7.1,1 ratio BPS pro qualifier and have never run into a capacity issue with it- you're only casting MAYBE100' if you're lucky with most Swimbaits. I have one heavier set up that pulls double duty on swimbaits and inshore saltwater that I recently switched to braid- I'm not a huge fan, because even 50lb braid can snap under 3-4 oz, which is why I got 80lb. The leader is supposed to help the "shock" of the cast, so stretchier is better. Whenever I use braid, I first cover the base of the spool with monofilament then use a uni/ Albright knot to connect the braid to avoid slippage- this is what I would refer to as backing. Electrical tape also works.
  21. I've been throwing the big rapala X-raps for pike... If they're what you're targeting, They are cheap and the way they're painted makes them last.
