freelancer27
Hi all, I am currently using a Phenix M1 Inshore (rated 2-8oz) with a Shimano Calcutta Conquest. I have been throwing mostly 6inch Huds and the rod handled them very well. Though every time I am trying to throw a 8 inch hud, a A-rig or some bigger top waters, I feel that the rod is way underpowered and nowhere near its 8 oz rating. I am wondering now if I should use my Phenix M1 to become my small swimbait/topwater rod and pair it with a Daiwa Luna 300 and get a new 'big bait' rod for my Conquest. Another aspect that buggs me a bit with the Phenix M1 is its weight and the shorter handle. Given that I have limited space in my car I am limited to a rod that is around 8 feet long. I am wondering what people here on the forum use. Thanks!cheers,Seb.
Darth Baiter
I use the LDC XXH Custom 8 footer, great rod! I know they have a parabolic action in that rod now, you might want to check them out... freelancer27 and IsaacM619
Campobassmaster
^ I haven't used LDC but I've only heard good stuff about them. I myself LOVE my Irod Bailey Swim series, the rod is 8' rated 3-10oz and has a moderate fast action. The bait throws anything like a charm. jmftattoo
13 fishings muse black 4-8oz throws exactly what it says it will. and all the way down to 2oz with no problems. scheduled to hit tackle warehouse Jan. 13th. if not that then keep your eye's peeled for ben's next release of white label's and get a xh and it'll throw probably 90% of the baits you'd want to throw. both rod's extremely versatile and worth every penny.s NEbucketmouth19
freelancer27
What do you guys think about the Dobyns Champion XP Swimbait Rod 8'6" Mag Heavy 867?Should be able to throw anything I want, right? jmftattoo
867 is a great rod. its tailored more towards treble baits in the 4-6.5oz range. it will throw heavier but feel's pretty labored past 7-8oz. and personally i think it has to much bend for jig hook applications. but thats just me. it's still a super versatile rod weight wise i've thrown down to 2oz on it. Top Ramen
The 867 is the most versatile rod I own. It will throw very small baits and can throw bigger baits up to an SS250, although it feels like it's working very hard when it chucks the Deps. It really shines with baits from 3-5oz. I have not had any issues using it with jig-hook baits but I try to cross their eyes on hook sets, so that almost never have that issue. jakevlastnik
If that 2-8 oz phenix is the 80h or the 79h you shouldnt have any worries with a hudd, i used to fish my 250s on the same rod and it handled it fine. But everyones different haha Low&Slow

Hm, that is a bit disappointing to hear that the sweet spot is between 3-5 oz. The rod is rated for 4-16oz. Are you referring to the right rod? Are you referring to the right rod? The 867 is a great rod but there rating system is a little embellished. I can throw up to 7 oz comfortably but anything more feels overloaded. Remember, everybody will have a different opinion depending on what feels right to them but ideally I think a Deps 250 is about it on that rod for most
ISO_the1
My 867 is great! I use it for everything! Hudd gill to BS mag! But it is 8' 6"...so it might be a tight fit in your car. My Okuma Guide Select "A" Series XXH is 7' 11" and the Deps 250 and BS Mag feel a lot better on this rod than the 867. I just received a Phenix M1 Inshore 7' 11" MH and a Phenix Black Diamond Inshore 867 that i was hoping to swap in my rotation of rods and kick out some of my frog and heavy cranking sticks I've been using for swimbaits. freelancer27

freelancer27
So I narrowed it down to three options:1. Used Dobyns 867 for 180 USD2. Okuma Guide Select "a" Series Swimbait Rod 7'11" XH or Okuma Guide Select "a" Series Swimbait Rod 7'11" XXH (125USD) 3. Genesis II Cast Rod 8' Swimbait Bailey Swim Heavy . (150USD)
