Real Wood/Hard Tail 3 Piece

Finally got around to building one of these far enough to test swim. Think I turned these blanks back in March. Pretty sure I made 4 or 6 of em.

wanted to make a real wood tail bait that wouldn’t require a soft/bristle tail but still wake/crank, goal was to make the tail thick enough to handle being casted into rocks/docks but thin enough to still swim and move water. Went with a beat up style tail look which I also thought would help the action.

i tried a two piece version awhile back that had zero action and shelved the idea, after seeing the line tie was the issue on this bait, I’ll revisit that one as it’s hanging in the workshop.

went with a 3 piece design this time around, messed with the joint gap distance and got it dialed in. The distance on the second to third section is wider to help the tail swing.

coffin style lip (my favorite) is big enough to push weeds/pads out of the way and keep the hooks clear (same design on the bigger fatter rats)

had to change the line tie location as the first one (dead center) gave the bait zero action.

turned from ayc, heat epoxy sealed, no weight added, screw eye and pin construction, bait is a hair under 9” and weighs 3.25oz with 3/0 KVD hooks/rings.

bait wakes like crazy as slow as you can turn the handle and will crankdown about 1’ max but rises up super quick, you can also burn it on top without it diving.

has a nice wood knocking sound from the first two sections and a softer knock from 2nd and 3rd section, also leaves a crazy bubble trail which wasn’t planned.

ill upload the swim video later, not the best as it was 34 degrees with freezing rain and only a small section of open water. Sits pretty high in the water, especially the top of the tail section.

thanks for checking it out, questions, comments, criticism always welcomed.

Thanks guys, I really like the swim on this one, as you can crank it dead slow and it swims/knocks. Found the other 3 blanks today in the garage.

got it painted today, epoxy tomorrow, went with something different color/style wise seeing this will be my night wake bait/low light went with some brighter colors, silver belly. Epoxy with have a double helping of holographic pearl.
