Seems like there have been some scammers lately. There have been 2 types 1. Long time members with good reputations from previous transactions. These guys are posting baits only taking PayPal friends and family and selling the same bait multiple times and never sending it to anybody. 2. New members answering WTB ads via PM saying their friend is selling please send them the money. (we have disabled PMs for new members as a result) SOLUTION: PAY WITH GOODS AND SERVICES ONLY. Any ads posted saying friends and family only will be deleted no matter how long the member has been here.19 points -

Just don’t use FF or any other payment method that doesn’t offer buyer protection unless you know for a fact you can trust the person. Scammers will figure out how to scam people no matter what verification steps are implemented19 points -

Gentlemen, I think the goal is for new members to become an active member within the S.U. Community, an establish themselves as a member and then be granted your P/M privileges. This is not a e-commerce site. This is a community of swimbait enthusiasts. Fortunately, it does offer a “Black Market” where you can buy, sell and trade at your own risk. Personally I think a new member should earn a defined amount of “Reputation Points”, showing they are an active member before being granted access to Buy, Sell & Trade here. It helps protect both new members and establish members. My recommendation : sit back, get involved, get established and partake in what is offered to you. Trust me, all good thing come to those who wait. Cheers & Tight Lines Everyone.13 points -

I think we’ve reached a point where predatory minds are targeting people in this community, deliberately. These transactions are often high dollar amounts and to be able to trade and sell I’ve been thinking it would be beneficial to make the requirements to do business more strict in efforts to combat the scamming. What do you guys think.12 points -

This is the correct answer. Maybe ask some people some questions or post some got ‘em catches to get your name out there, people will remember you and that’s called establishing a reputation, just like real life, you don’t just walk in the door and start swinging your dick around when you start a new job right? Same idea.8 points -

One more time for the people in the back. If you're willing to drop $200+ on a bait/rod/reel just pay the fees. if they won't take G&S move on, there will always be another one.6 points -
All transactions would have to be G&S. That's the only way to solve this issue. Pay the fee and save yourself some heartache and frustration. If seller only wants F&F, then just walk away from the deal. No one is forcing you to buy a bait.6 points

I agree! No offense to anyone but it just seems like it's mostly people that joined during the covid era or more recent. I know theres alot of solid guys that have joined since then, but man the shady deals, scams and general disrespect has really picked up in the last couple years. Sorry for the rant.6 points

if you don't like it...there's always Ebay. Or perhaps you could just participate in the community....? I believe that's the original intention of this site. I get that there's alot of folks that are here for the black market but I think there's just as many folks that wanna talk fishing, share catches, get tips on new techniques.5 points -

Straight from the IRS site regarding 1099-K's. This is where it's going to hurt the flippers more than the non-flippers. In summary you only have to pay taxes on your gains, not if you're selling baits for what you paid for them or less. Link below if you want to go read it. A. Gain or loss on the sale of a personal item is generally the difference between the amount you paid for the item (the purchase price) and the amount you receive when you sell it (the sales price). For example, if you bought a refrigerator for $1,000 (the purchase price) and sold it for $600 (the sales price), you have a loss of $400. $600 sales price - $1,000 purchase price = ($400) loss amount. On the other hand, if you bought concert tickets for $500 (the purchase price) and sold them for $900 (the sales price), you have a gain of $400. $900 sales price - $500 purchase price = $400 gain amount. The gain on the sale of a personal item is taxable. You must report the transaction (gain on sale) on Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital AssetsPDF, and Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Schedule D, Capital Gains and LossesPDF. See Publication 551, Basis of AssetsPDF, for guidance in determining your basis. The gain on the sale of a personal item might be reported on a Form 1099-K. The loss on the sale of a personal item is not deductible. For calendar year 2022 tax returns, if you receive a Form 1099-K, for the sale of a personal item that resulted in a loss, you should make offsetting entries on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Schedule 1, Additional Income and Adjustments to Income, as follows: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/form-1099-k-frequently-asked-questions-general4 points -

I have an easy fix for this problem as far as I’m concerned: if I know you well enough as an established and respected SU member then I’m choosing to buy from you without involving the IRS. I’m on texting basis with many of you anyways. Also I’m only selling to the established SU members I know well from now on to keep the buying/selling transactions as a benefit to those who stay here long enough with respect, transparency and accountability. Buying and selling on SU should be a privilege and not a right for everyone. If you haven’t done time with us you’re not doing crime with us….. I have spoken!4 points -

Selling a good condition OG white python with slant bridge handle. Rod has some minor scratches towards the bottom where I keep the hook keeper. Cork could use a bit of cleaning but otherwise rod is nice. Rod tip and all guides are still intact. I also have the original white rod bag that comes with the rod. Looking to get $350 firm plus shipping for it. Lmk if interested. Thanks!3 points -

Almost all the other forums I used or still use always required new members to have a certain number of post and/or be a member for a certain number of days before being able to sell/buy and/or pm other members, plus only one account from each IP address. I’ve never seen a black market/bst run the way it’s done here either. every other forum needs a price posted, and the first “i take it” in the thread gets the bait. Everything is out in the open. I remember finding that out the hard way when I joined here and missing out on a ton of baits. And all the back door deals. But that’s how the SU forum is run and handled so it is what it is. Just much different than all other forums I’ve used. the recent uptick in scammers is crazy. With everyone blowing baits out super cheap lately it’s easy prey for scammers or even old members to capitalize on people (which seems to also be happening) Luckily I’ve never been beat only by UPS and USPS3 points -

I never saw reference checks in that way. I welcome any buyer of mine to feel free to do a reference check on me publicly. If someone is offended that you'd not take their word and need to ask the public, then to me, I'd pass. Even if they weren't scamming, to have that kind of ego I'd just rather not deal with that person3 points -

Wait I traded with this guy… our trade went smooth but I do have the address I shipped to. He showed me a hinkle and asked if it was a good deal. He said he found it at a yard sale and it looked very similar to one of the 4 hinkles I had stolen in 2019. Being only 1 state away from him I got excited thinking he may have stumbled on one of my lost hinkles and offered to buy it. Upon further inspection I realized the hinkle was probably fake and advised him not to buy it. I actually mentioned to my girl I wonder if he’s just trying to scam me because after trying to build my trust with the trade. He said the guy at the garage sale told him He’d hold the bait until the next day and that he didn’t know much about them and reached out for my help before purchasing. But then acted like he couldn’t afford jt but would buy it for me if I wanted it. So I started to think why would this dude offer to go to a garage sale and buy a hinkle for someone you hardly know… he may not have had foul intentions but after seeing these other posts I’m glad I thought something was fishy and backed out.3 points -

Few years ago I got scammed buying a hardgill for $40 ff. My credit card is tied to my paypal as one of the payment options. I called the credit card, told them I made a purchase from a private seller and never received the item. They gave me a temporary refund, told me they'd reach out to the seller to see if he disputes or can show something was sent and delivered. Which obviously the guy didn't. The temporary refund became permanent. I'm still using paypal to this day. Try what I did. Good luck bro3 points -
